Why waste thousands of manhours and processing time creating a game that will only appeal to part of the demographic, when you can insert a powerful female rolemodel in an otherwise "male" game?

Besides, I doubt there is a single female night elf rogue out there that is actually a woman.

I played female night elves when I first started playing WoW. They drew me in as the prettiest race (this was long before the age of blood elves). My wonderful husband put himself through the agony of playing a male night elf because I wanted him to

Soon I saw the light though

I disagree. I'd say that games for girls is an alternative market, perhaps. Think about how many girls there are in the world; that's no niche! :D

Even if you assume that 50% of all games purchasers are female, if you release a game aimed at girls you will corner little more than 50% of the market. (Though I assume there will be males who purchased Barbie Horse Adventures or whatever.) If you release one aimed at boys, you like as not will get the male half and a good 50% of the female half.

Guys just dont buy My Little Pony for xbox. But girls and boys like Lara Croft. (nice arse/strong woman)

Two days ago in the Norwegian news paper Aftenposten there was an article on gaming and who the gamers are. It was based on an American survey and showed that 40% of all gamers are female.
Females above the age of 18 amount to 33 % of the game playing population.

The survey also showed that 26 % of the gamers are above 50, 25 % is under 18 and 49 % is 18-49.

I'm not a girl but i know that my girlfriend enjoys simple games that yahoo and aim offer which are like ball blasters (the only one i can think of ) basically quick simple games that have no story or depth she also likes super Mario brothers but another game i know woman love is the Sims they make up 55 percent of the fan base i think its because it allows you to design and customize everything from clothing to home decor there's no violence or gore its more of a social simulator things i think girls like most

Besides all the awesome stuff everyone likes you like Digimon?! Oh my god marry me!

I don't know if girl gamers are necessarily so different from male gamers. Sure, most girls don't like shooting games and really gory stuff, but my sister, sister-in-law and I love racing games, sports game (usually it has to be cartoon for my sister though - personally I like skateboard and basketball games the most), and even a few shooting games (resident evil 4 rocks!)
A game that works for both boys and girls is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the Gamecube. It has the action fun stuff for the boys (though I really enjoy it too), but the Chaos part is so cute and definitely for the girls :D
I basically like most games, except some puzzles and a couple games that don't even fit in a genre. I love Pokemon, Sonic and Mario the most though :D And Sims.

Girl gamers aren't that much different from guy gamers. Just look at the posts on here. If that wasn't the case, girls wouldn't play ANY video games. As for Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, the camera angles were horrible. I broke a couple of controllers on that game lol. But yeah, I'm now into NBA2K6 for the Xbox. Good basketball game. My player is called Stab Wounds Rodriguez and he is awesome. Jet Set Radio Future is one of the best games I ever played. Zelda: Ocarina of Time was good too. Soul Calibur 2 was great. Halo is fun, just not the multiplayer LOL I know I suck. Max Payne has the best story I've ever seen. Zelda has the best gameplay I've ever seen. Dead or Alive has the best graphics I've seen. And Jet Set Radio Future has that "it" factor that's impossible to descibe, but impossible to forget. Although I have to say, wrestling games have always been really fun. Tables ladders and chairs oh my. I created my ex girlfriend and I beat her up. I accidentally made her the best character in the game though. So it's not easy winning. She pokes me in the eyes and kicks me in the nuts until I lose. She would do that too. skank

I'd be surprised if you have played a MUD. Achaea, Aetolia, Imperian, Lusternia.. Four muds by one company: Iron Realms Entertainment. Those are very well known MUDs, but not many RPG fans know them. They may be text based but they are still an MMO, because they fit the description of one, just there is no picture.

I like RP games. I used to be addicted to harvest moon a couple of years back and every now and then I get addicted to playing neopets.

I've not been too into games for a little while though I'm probably gonna buy a DS soon.

I am 33, female, and have had an on-again, off-again love affair with video games since I received the Atari 2600 as a gift back when I was 8 years old. My favorite videogame genre is RPG, due to creating a character, watching that character develop, and developing relationships with characters as part of the plot. From this genre, my favorite game is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. There are two games in the series, but I prefer the first over the second.

This game in particular has the player customize the character's abilities and appearance, just like regular RPGs, but decisions the player makes influences whether they are light side or dark side. There is also a romance sidequest which is my favorite aspect of the game. My character was a female who had a developing romance with one of the male characters. I loved being able to select responses and would eagerly look forward when a new line of dialogue would appear. I became just as obsessed with the male NPC as I would with a real life boyfriend!

Other games I like are adventure and strategy games. The Zelda series, the Age of Empire series, the Civilization series, and the Jedi Knight series are all games I enjoy.
