You're right. I don't understand. What does your computer have that your XBox doesn't? Both of mine have ethernet jacks and use the same cables and neither one needs a router.

the computer i use is on the first floor whereas my xbox360 is on the second, plus i have all the ports but i don't have the router needed. i use a DSL to connect to the internet and so i haven't got the ports to connect the xbox360.

your computer and console might have all the needed attributes but if you can't connect them you can't do much.
