I append. After seeing some of the footage of the game that's just been released, nostalgia is getting the best of me. :(

So long 3D Realms, you may not have actually developed a game since, I dunno, I was in middle school, but I'll still miss ya. :salut:

I read on the 3DR boards that the game was very close to completion, though this could just be a rumor...and there's no telling how much of it will stay and how much of it will have to go when and if these other guys pick up development.

I'm fairly confident that we won't have a Fallout 3 repeat on our hands, either way :x

Anyone hear about the supposed conspiracy? That 3d realms would purposely use duke nukem forever as a testing ground for various engine for Epic (who did the Unreal engine) rather than actually try and make a finished product, creating a legend because of its development time and when it finally was released it would be great? It's the only explanation that makes sense to me.

I've heard a theory that 3DR didn't really go out of business, it was just a publicity stunt to gain interest in DN4.

Of course, this turned out to be half-true...apparently 3DR didn't really go out of business, they just had to fire everyone who was working on Duke.

Apparently Take-Two still owns publishing rights, so this can still get released. Actually, since a new team could start work on it, the game has a better chance of release.

My first thoughts too. Thing is this comes just as they actually release some footage of it. Drat!

And 3D Realms is active; however, their company is a lot smaller due to Take-Two lawsuite
over the Duke Nukem Forever being unfinished and all that and loss of funding.
Just read this statement they on May 18, it will further explain the situation.
and if your wondering where I got, it was copied from Wikipedia:

On May 18, 2009 3D Realms key executives released the first full official "press release" with their side of the developments. "... 3D Realms (3DR) has not closed and is not closing. ... Due to lack of funding, however, we are saddened to confirm that we let the Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) development team go on May 6th,... While 3DR is a much smaller studio now, we will continue to operate as a company and continue to licence and co-create games based upon the Duke Nukem franchise. ... Take-Two’s proposal was unacceptable to 3DR for many reasons, including no upfront money, no guarantee minimum payment, and no guarantee to complete the DNF game. ...we viewed Take-Two as trying to acquire the Duke Nukem franchise in a “fire sale.” ... ...we believe Take-Two’s lawsuit is without merit and merely a bully tactic to obtain ownership of the Duke Nukem franchise. We will vigorously defend ourselves against this publisher."

So, reading this statement, Take-Two had not provided funds for the DNF project, nor
did they give any support for the project and development team (as far as I can see, I think).
So 3D Realms could possibal walk free from the lawsuite and sue Take-Two for lack of funding
and support for the DNF project. I hope I'm right with this come-up.
