When you view the "Train/Spaceship" videos that I posted, watch the expression on the face of Philip Glass as he plays.

Is he stimming?

We should create a new thread asking if Philip Glass is on the Autism Spectrum.

I've never thought of playing a keyboard as being a stim, but why not? And the highly mathematical nature of his music would suggest a different way of thinking.

Well, my diagnostician reckons that the music I play is a socially acceptable form of stimming that I somehow stumbled on. Even conventional music is of course usually very repetitive. As for facial expressions, all I know is that a lot of musicians pull very strange faces while they're playing. I always assumed it was the intense concentration that caused that, or maybe in some cases it's done consciously as a gimmick.

I couldn't listen to the piece in the opening post. I'm not usually averse to such things but somehow it made me feel sensory overload - weird for something called minimalist. The violin piece posted later in the thread was actually interesting to me for a bit but that got me on edge after a while as well.

In a strange way., a little fascinating how I reacted,

Not to my taste. Can't even listen to it without being uncomfortable. I need music that's more physical than that. I'm already spending a lot of time in my head..... the music I listen to brings me into my body for a time. (So to speak.)

I try to focus on the slower beat/beep that's embedded in the repetition. It kind of reminds me of a pin ball bouncing around...that beep allows me to take my focus off what I interpret as the "background noise" because it is less frequent and actually seems to go somewhere.

The piece is very past-paced and dizzying. I find it somewhat grating...especially if I try to think about other things. It's like a bee that won't leave me alone as I try to stay focused on my thoughts, which are like the slower "pin-ball" beep that I referred to.

well apparently that glass video is sped up quite a bit. lame

I much prefer minimalism to other types of orchestral music. Every film score using the same textures and scales people have been using for centuries. Thats boring and repetative to me

I learnt about Philip Glass in my music class this year and fell in love with his music. I find the repetitiveness calming and I'm quite fond of the polyphonic texture. What I noticed in class is that his kind of minimalistic music is either loved or hated and the people who appealed to the minimalism were really random, like my one friend who's very mathematically minded absolutely hated it whereas my romantic-era-piano-playing friend loved it.

Minimal techno is very popular where I live. The first time I heard it, it really felt amazing. It can be a little overstimulating at times though, if it's too intense. I have to use it in moderation. : )

I've heard very little minimalist music that doesn't make me want to pull my own eardrums out.
After less than a minute I'm going "Ok, I GET IT ALREADY!! DEVELOP!! !!"

What about this minimalist industrial instrumental music?

Minimalism used to be a special interest of mine and has faded in and out of it since!! Speaking of, if you like minimalism, you'll love this!!

I've recently been getting into some of Arvo Part's works. Here's one I've been listening to pretty frequently as of late:

It's pretty good stuff considering just how basic and how few notes the music has
