The Jason Webley album Against the Night is great for hard times. It's all about hidden potential and light after the darkness.

Also, every abused child in the world deserves a copy of The Sunset Tree by The Mountain Goats. It didn't directly apply to me much, but I could always feel good that someone had come through a childhood much harder than my rough one and made art better than I may ever be able to because of it.

I used to gain "comfort" through Linkin Park music, even if their lyrics weren't such. I still listen to some of their songs.

The music I listen for comfort is like this:
Evanescence, Elton John, Depeche Mode, Robbie Williams, Trigun original soundtrack, and soundtrack music from old games I have played; for nostalgia's sake.

Same here. Seems like there's only a handful of "rock stars" who've written lyrics that more introverted people like me can relate to. There are others like The Smiths and Joy Division too. I notice a lot of people bash rock/pop musicians for being "mopey" when they try to be emotionally expressive rather than all about the life of the party, drugs, sex, and rebellion. :x

I think for the moment, Björk, Nick Drake, Tom Waits, First Aid Kit, The Tallest Man On Earth and Andrew Bird. They've all been there for me in a lot of my toughest times. I'm really fond of Vivaldi, Dvorak and Segovia. They help me think straight when I'm having trouble formulating coherent thoughts. Also I really love Oliver Schroer and Joe Hisaishi for just simply losing myself in music.

Simon & Garfunkel were favorites when I was younger. I'm finding that I quite like J-pop at the moment; with it not being in English, it's all music, without any distracting and often terrible lyrics.

I like K-pop for that reason. Pop music can make you really happy because it is easy to listen to and has strong beats you can dance to and stuff but yeah the lyrics annoy the hell out of me. All about relationships and stuff, it makes me really depressed.

I'm also an avid fan of classical music. I love hearing the richness and depth of symphonies and quiet piano pieces, it makes you feel such deep emotions. Some of my favourite composers are Beethoven, Elgar, Brahms, Shostakovitch, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and Debussy.

I like a lot of music... lil' wayne, snoop dogg, wiz kalifa and drake pretty much satisfy my need for rap. I like chill rock with a dash of folk, like Counting Crows and indigo girls. I like contemp pop and techno, like niki minaj. And I like meaningful music, soul music, whatever you want to call it, like florence and the machine. I grew up on country music, but now I HATE it; it mostly makes me depressed.

I'm not sure if music gets me through feeling low, but I play it a lot when I do feel low. I think I use it to explore emotions. Maybe it's self indulgent, but sometimes I can tell what sort of mood I'm in by the music I play, and the songs that mean most to me tend to help me understand what I am feeling. Music reflects emotion, as much as creates it, for me. But I don't tend to find music makes me feel better, or keeps me alive.

Prodigy/Aphex Twin et al. for when you need motivation or angry release.

Bob Marley/Norman Cook/Thievery Corporation et al. for when you need to chill out and be happy.
