Do you people honestly think that posting in some forum like this is legally considered a petition???

Do you even think it matters taht you are posting here, at elast in terms of this? Now, support alex by encourageing him is one thing, but this is just plain foolish, it is just spam, and in reality afaik there is NO legal precedent for alex to be sued by anyone involved with the william freund incident.

Pessimist. Sorry, but you just ruined the fun.

Actually realist with a bit of knowledge.

And in case your wondering, I was involved in the willfrenud incident myself. He came to me asking for information on how to avoid/get out of suicide watch at his local mental ward. He also offered one of my good friends $500 cash for the real name and address of an op who banned him from a chatroom for talking about killing people, he said he wanted to kill that op, and needed to know where, he lived, etc.

Clearly the man was a nutjob with enough knowledge to be a real threat, and I'm honestly shocked he killed as few as he did when he snapped. IIRC attempts were made to contact local authorities and his parents, or at least to get their ientity through their ISP, however that information was not made public, who protection of privacy issues, so nothing more could have been legally done.

1) I agree that the suit against WP would be unlikely to make it past a drunk judge with a migraine. It's not uncommon for a lawsuit to name tons of defendants.

2) I also agree that this "petition" is nowhere near a legal document. Even if KBABZ didn't have "I signed the petition 4x" right up there for everyone to see, online petitions of any sort have as much legal weight as a blogger's report of a ruling on Judge Judy. (No criticism, KBABZ. You didn't break anything.)

3) I also would point out that even if this were a physical petition, with notarized signatures, it would have zero effect on a lawsuit.

4) All this notwithstanding, I sign.

A petition is a way of showing support. Most petitions you sign have zero legal weight. (The only exception that leaps to mind is petitions for balloting issues.) I don't think Alex needs it... see point one... but I'm not a legal expert. And even if he doesn't, this site is amazing, and I'm going to put it here where he can get to it should he decide he wants it.

Even if this petition only serves to give Alex a warm fuzzy feeling, it's worth it.

'Sign the petition!'
What exactly will the petition do? Show that a number of users of the site in trouble want to keep it alive? The membership of the site obviously wants to keep it where it is. Signing petitions is generally a waste of time - it will show that particular people support the cause, but nothing more.

I consider this emotional support, which in my opinion is worthy in its own right. As I said, I don't pretend it's anything more.

I would like to say, that online forums cannort offer you the utmost support. If Someone says something, who's to know wether it's real or fake? And if someone does think it's real, then the police, ect, can't really tell if it's real. They can't go checking out every little threat thats been said on a message board.

Isn't the thousand some dollars a month over operating cost that Alex is making from this, as well as the fact it helps him get other income and increase how well known he is enough reason for him to keep the site up?
