Personality disorders stigma?
I absolutely agree. This shoudln´t be a PD. Stupid "experts".
First of all Schizoid PD is not even in the DSM-5 anymore and second of all originally SPD was a construct to explain mild (especially) negative symptoms from the schizophrenic spectrum some people experience without having schizophrenia themself. Later on it lost a bit it's original meaning and it just mostly ment a person who want's to be for her- or himself. That the originally meaning of SPD changed up to some degree has a lot to do with the fact that schizotypal PD was added. In the ICD-10 you still have the diagnostic criteria of a high level of phantasy, what still kept a bit more the original meaning of SPD.
The newer deffinition of SPD how it was described in the DSM-IV is also a lot more than introversion, it means more that a person is mostly totally isolated and also doesn't care much for human contact. When you like to stay in your room in the evenings, but still like to talk to your siblings for example, than you are propably not schizoid, but just an introvert.
I know what Schizoid is, there's different levels of it. People with Schizoid supposedly have emotions to a lesser degree than normal people, mostly don't think that it's a disorder and so therefore, won't seek treatment. Actually, a lot of people with Schizoid think it's a good thing, and think that it's contributed to there creativity.
The few Schizoid's I've spoken to consider the world to be somewhat of dream, not entirely really...I don't know how to explain this really, but it's like...you're the most important person in the world to yourself, yet you're no better or worse than anyone else, so why should you care for other people or what they say or do?
There's no psychosis in Schizoid though. Isolation isn't psychosis.
Doesn't change the fact that many people with certain PDs damage people around them. Nobody really chooses to be who/what they are anyway.
But the same can be said of Psychosis/mania. Nobody asked for that either. There are some people with personality disorders and mental illnesses that are dangerous. A person with Antisocial PD is probably pretty dangerous. The same can be said of a person with Schizophrenia who is convinced that the FBI are tracking them through the fillings in his teeth and thinks that random people on the street are government assassins hired to hunt him down and kill him. You're less likely to get someone blaming somebody for having Schizophrenia than blaming someone for having Antisocial PD. If someone is dangerous, whether it's because of a mental illness or a personality disorder, then it is right that end up in a secure hospital somewhere. If anything, for there own protection.
Problem is it would require a miracle to legally get a Narcissist (or anybody really) confined in such a place just for being persistently emotionally abusive.

Oh, I was referring to when people get physically dangerous. Emotionally abusive...yes, that would be difficult, and as it is, there's a**holes in life that don't have a PD/mental illness that are emotionally abuseive.
These days, people make fun of personality disorders so much that if you admit to having one, people will think you're joking--unless you can't cover it up. People say things like "I'm OCD about cleaning my room" or stuff like that. Really, people with personality disorders are harmless...you may know someone with a personality disorder and not know that person even has it--unless they get to know you so well that they confide in you and tell you.

I have a great deal of compassion for mentally ill individuals - I've seen people struggle with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc. And I am sorry for them. Many of them have shown a great deal of strength and insight to deal with their illness.
Alternatively, personality disordered individuals are just downright scary. The best tactic in dealing with them is to leave them alone, away from their wrecking ball damage. That's why.
Darn.. with your line of logic, no wonder why everyone leaves me alone in college.

Yer, some of the posts on this forum are horrible. Which is why I'd like to remind the users of this forum of the many, many neurotypicals that say "Stay away from Aspies" or "Stay away from Autistics" and give some reason such as they don't care about people.
And then they come on here and moan about that. Before posting about how everyone must stay away from a borderline PD.
I assure you, I have in the past come across Aspies that "shamelessly lie and hurt others" and are "fully aware" or at the very least, sane whilst doing so.
I have compassion for everyone with a personality disorder except for those with antisocial personality disorder. The reason being is that it's not logical to have compassion for someone who will think you a fool for it. Just not logical.
I have compassion for everyone else, even the narcissists. However, I will avoid narcissists that I deem to be harmful to my mental well being. This is only common sense. Same true with borderline. I have compassion but that doesn't mean I will tolerate bad behavior.

I wish more people were like you.
It just means that your behaviours are "strange" and that people think you could change them...!

Well actually it's very different. When you are schizoid, it means that you are a loner, when you are Borderline it means that you are highly emotional, when you are antisocial, well it means that you are antisocial and so on...!
Those are more extreme behavioural consepts who are out of the norm and so the diagnoses is very often stigmatised and also very subjective.

I think something needs to be said here about the perpetuation of some of the myths about Borderline Personality Disorder (known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder in ICD-10) in particular the quesions of manipulation, violence and treatability.
First, manipulation. People with BPD/EUPD struggle to regulate emotions. So, if a person communicates intense pain, or engages in self-harming or suicidal behaviour, this causes an intense reaction in significant others. It is then assumed that the intense reaction was the intention when the behaviours were undertaken.
This is not a safe assumption. This is tricky for many Aspies to understand, because we tend to look at outcomes (intense reaction) rather than intentions, which may simply to have been to communicate or to release pain. As Marsha Linehan points out, were you to withhold pain medication from a burn victim or cancer patient, they would quickly engage in "attention-seeking" or self-destructive behaviour in order to cope.
I do not recognise the description of a prior poster's co-worker, booking out all the overtime. I suspect something else was going on here. My suspicion is that the logic runs "This person had BPD; this person behaved in this way; therefore this person's behaviour was caused by the BPD". This is not a logical syllogism. Someone can have BPD and be a jerk, just as someone can be a jerk and not have BPD. Having BPD does not make you a jerk.
I'm going to quote Wikipedia verbatim here: "The features of BPD include emotional instability, intense unstable interpersonal relationships, a need for intimacy, and a fear of rejection. As a result, people with BPD often evoke intense emotions in those around them. Pejorative terms to describe people with BPD, such as "difficult," "treatment resistant," "manipulative," "demanding" and "attention seeking," are often used, and may become a self-fulfilling prophecy as the negative treatment of these individuals triggers further self-destructive behavior."
I've faced this. I know there is a problem. I've asked for help. I've been turned away. This worsens symptoms.
On the subject of violence, the research does not support the stereotype of people with BPD being violent. BPD does come with emotional instability and intense anger, but this tends to be directed inwards - into self hatred, self harm and suicidal ideation. This is not the case in ASPD, which is something else entirely. Again, the research suggests that many people with BPD have experienced violence, and have a low tolerance for violent behaviour (I know I do - it's one reason why, when I hit a meltdown, it's so freaky). I now stay out of situations where I might get angry.
BPD/EUPD is not untreatable. The available research suggests that the most effective interventions rely on long-term psychotherapy. Mentalization-based treatment (MBT), transference-focused psychotherapy, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) have all been shown to be effective, but require a long-term commitment, which makes them expensive. Refusal to treat says more about healthcare budgets and stigma than it does about the clinical evidence.
This leads me to prognosis. One longitudinal study found that 73.5% of patients were in remission by the end of the study. This required treatment, not stigmatisation.
So, I would like to ask that, before people make any more generalised stigmatising remarks on here, they check their facts before they start to type! Much of what has been written by other posters has been wrong at best and libellous at worst.

Oh good, I can't have BPD because I could never do that.
But as toxic as these people are it's not their fault. They have no control over it and need help.

The trouble is, this isn't a description of BPD, It sounds more like a description of Anti-Social Personality Disorder.
Wow. Thanks, Niall. It must hurt to have people talk about your condition in such a way. It hurt yesterday when people denied PDA was real. I'm still unsure if I have it but my fear of change and feeling I'm being controlled by others when they tell me to do things is just severe enough that it fits.
"Taking everyone's overtime" sounds more like hypomania than BPD. Again, not the person's fault. I get really excited about doing this thing that seems so awesome and you do it because it makes you feel good or it's worth a laugh. This type of impulsivity is very hard to control because it just feels so right.
Then again, I'm unsure if I have bipolar but I've felt this mood enough and come down from it to know it wasn't in my control.
I can get so anxious over people telling me what to do I would do anything to avoid it. I even wanted to slit my wrists to be left alone. I never did but I don't think I was being manipulative. I was just having so much anxiety over it. I was even going to run away and torch bush land. I actually felt the pain of those kids who usually do that. These were just thoughts but at the time I had a scary determination to do it.
I'm really not a bad person.
