Personality disorders stigma?
I have a great deal of compassion for mentally ill individuals - I've seen people struggle with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc. And I am sorry for them. Many of them have shown a great deal of strength and insight to deal with their illness.
Alternatively, personality disordered individuals are just downright scary. The best tactic in dealing with them is to leave them alone, away from their wrecking ball damage. That's why.
Oh good, I can't have BPD because I could never do that.
But as toxic as these people are it's not their fault. They have no control over it and need help.
pensieve, please don't believe everything ppl write on here...

Did you read my last post that I posted HOURS ago that showed that I understood it more?
And how do you even know what my mental state was? Don't just assume we are all capable of thinking clearly. I didn't want to be bothered by what Niall said to me but my last post should have been clear enough that I finally nuderstood it a bit better.
Oh, forgive me for misunderstanding what BPD was like for two minutes.
I hate my emotions.

I didn't want to be bothered by what Niall said to me
I hope I didn't bother anyone. My apologies if I did.
My take-home message was that much that is said and written about BPD/EUPD is untrue, misleading and/or unfairly stigmatising. It does cause damage, largely as a result of misunderstanding and unfair preconceptions, but violence is unusual and usually linked to other problems, and it is treatable.
I also hoped to get a small minority to think and check their facts before they post.
It's also worth pointing out that there is behavioural overlap between BPD/EUPD and Stressed Aspie, such that I wonder if the BPD/EUPD d/x may be wrong. For instance, many people with BPD/EUPD have problems with impulsive behaviour, which I don't have a particular issue with, beyond that commonly found in stressed Aspies.

As I have said once and I will say once again, it's amazing how many on this site complain about people not understanding aspergers and wanting acceptance for who they are, and wishing people would understand, and not bothering to do the same for people with another condition.
You may be born with an ASD, and a personality disorder may well be something that someone develops. But that does not make it the persons fault, and if one of you asstwats would bother to actually do some research instead of simply spewing out stories of manipulative, lying husbands that you celebrate the death of, that would be great. In fact, I see that a lot on this site. Stay away from bipolar people, they'll ruin your life. Borderlines can't be trusted./ It's the same people that post [i]I wish someone would understand my aspergers syndrome[i] without bothering to attempt to understand any other conditions! In fact, there are people out there who would tell you to stay away from someone with an ASD, and that they are in fact "manipulative, lying, can't understand emotions at all and don't care about you".
So I ask that if you are going to post on BTSP, please bother to do some research on the subject instead of posting stigmatized BS on here. If I wanted that, I'd be on Reddit.

There was someone here long ago who decided to hate all of us with AS because of one person he knew who didn't feel a certain way about something. The person wasn't even manipulative.
Then on an ADHD forum a woman blamed ADHD on her husbands narcissistic behaviour.
A while back I got angry at people for denying ADHD even existed, echoing something similar to what you said.

I was experiencing a mixed episode yesterday (and today) and had very little control over my emotions. I was waiting for someone to respond to my second post but no one did. I exploded.
But I said worse things to people outside of this forum.
I just want to learn more about BPD because it was suggested to me that I may have it.
I had barely any focus at all to read the whole thread properly though.

Sadly there are some really bad clichées out there about BPD.
One reason for this is, that it is becomming popular in the western culture to dx others with certain psychiatric disorders, even untrained ppl. And many missinterprete every "bad" behaviour for BPD.
The second reason for it is that ppl with BPD are often "difficult" patients because of their emotional issues and many psychiatrists don't reeeeeally know how to treat such ppl correctly and so some sadly just look to get rid of them.
I was once miss-dx with suspicion of BPD tendencies (I had traumatic symptoms, my therapist "dx" me with) and Psychiatrists weren't exactly nice to me at that time, just because I had this suspicion.
So it's not always the BPD being difficult or are the reason for changing psychiatrists. Now I'm rediagnosed and everything turned out fine, but I wouldn't like to relive my experiences, they were too unpleasent and I kind of lost my trust in psychiatrists back than.
Especially for autistic ppl this situation can be difficult, because of their lack of social understanding and with most ppl with BPD psychiatrist assume to have a veeery good social understanding, eventhough they don't always know how to deal with situations correctly because of their emotional issues and in autistic ppl the reason of behaviour is a different one. Also ppl with ASD can have extreme emotions or even self-harm in some cases and so on, so there is a certain overlapp.
But I said worse things to people outside of this forum.

It's alright.
You know that also autistic ppl can have sometimes extreme emotions?
There is also a big overlapp between BPD and Bipolar.
You can have of course more than one disorder, but I personally am carefull when it comes to comorbidities. Especially in such cases I would go to an expert. Are you officially dx with an ASD? Because in that case I would go to an autism expert to check for possible comorbidities, because they know best the overlapp and also the differences.
I've to addmit that I've also issues focusing. I got dx with ADD just recently and I propably get supscribed meds for it, but because the diagnosis was jsut so resently so we haven't figured out the right way to deal with it. So it's nothing personal if I miss information.

I've seen people deny all sorts exist on here, and claim that bipolar didn't exist due to the fact that he was misdiagnosed. I hate it when people deny something which means I am unable to work, has pretty much destroyed my life, and has had me admitted to hospital, exists. Especially whilst stating that there own disorders existed. Of course, they are well aware they exist. They live with them. I don't. I could just as easily say "I don't understand OCD, it doesn't exist". I live with bipolar. It's a reality for me, and I am well aware of what mania feels like and how destructive it can be, and how easy it is to loose control whilst manic, and that is a lot more, than simply feeling "happy", contrary to popular belief.
But, it was stupidly late when I had that outburst last night. But still, I don't post many other places on here but BTSP (and the gaming forum

I thought I was ASD. They think I may be borderline instead. And upon reading stories of borderline people, I honestly feel as though I am reading something someone wrote about my life. With the exception of one thing-my moods don't change fast enough to be borderline mood swings. At the same time, they change faster than the usual bipolar mood swings (Which last weeks, months at a time). There is such a big overlap between bipolar and borderline, bipolar and ASD, borderline and ASD...I've seen a lot of people say they've been misdiagnosed with bipolar I when they actually have an ASD. How they were diagnosed with Bipolar I, I don't know, seeing as Bipolar I mania is usually overly extreme, and dangerous.
I believe in three things when it comes to diagnosis:
1) Psychiatrists can be wrong, especially when they are untrainened in a certain disorder and/or diagnose too fast (happens very often in psychiatric clinics)
2) The patient knows him/herself best and his/her opinion should be respected
3) but still, psychiatric disorders should be always confirmed by prefoessionally trainened psychiatrists.
... and also you usually kind of feel when a disorder is right, it just fits.
When I was once miss-dx the psychiatrist addmitted in the end that he didn't have much experience in gender identity disorder and so also didn't really looked at the rest and just "dx" me with something.
Also I freaked at that time, because my experiences in the looked ward were very shooking for me.
The Psychitrist also told me, he could re-dx me if I wanted to, but I didn't, at least not by him...!
Dx psychiatric disorder can be very difficult, especially when also comorbitities are involved.
----
A guy I know was miss-dx with Bipolar II (he was re-dx with Asperger's later on) and he thought this happened, because he noticed little differences and his thoughts seemed to be "odd" and also he has a "nervous character" and when you don't look at it exactly it might look like Hypomania when it is not. The problem is, why many get miss-dx is when psychiatrists don't look at the history exactly because they are in a rush or are too shure.

Bipolar is overdiagnosed. I guess whereas ADHD was the "trendy" diagnosis for psychiatrist to give in the nineties, it's now bipolar. Having a depressive episode and you occasionally feel happy some of the time? There's some psychiatrists that would label you as bipolar. Bad behavior in a two year old toddler? Bipolar. So on, so on...
Psychiatrists can be wrong. After all, all they really have to go on is what you tell them. There's no tests as such for personality disorders or bipolar.

In my country the Bipolar dx is actually not that common and not dx in children, just maybe in rare cases.
This dx little children and toddlers with Bipolar is really mostly an american thing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_di ... ifferences
Bipolar disorder in children
National differences
Another issue is that the consensus regarding the diagnosis in the pediatric age group may only apply to the USA. The British National Institute on Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines on bipolar disorder in 2006 [18] specifically described the broadened criteria used in the USA to diagnose bipolar disorder in children as suitable "only for research" and "were not convinced that evidence currently exists to support the everyday clinical use of (pediatric bipolar phenotype) diagnoses" which increase the "risk that medicines may be used to inappropriately treat a bipolar diathesis that does not exist."(p526). A 2002 German survey [19] of 251 child and adolescent psychiatrists (average 15 years clinical experience) found only 8% had ever diagnosed a pre-pubertal case of bipolar disorder in their careers. A similar survey of 199 child & adolescent psychiatrists (av 15 years clinical experience) in Australia and New Zealand [20] also found much lower rates of diagnosis than in the USA and a consensus that bipolar disorder was overdiagnosed in children and youth in the USA. Concerns about overdiagnosis in the USA have also been expressed by American child & adolescent psychiatrists [21][22][23][24] and a series of essays in the book "Bipolar children: Cutting-edge controversy, insights and research" [25] highlight several controversies and suggest the science still lacks consensus with regard to bipolar disorder diagnosis in the pediatric age group.

While it is true that what they have to go on is what you tell them (and what you show them in any other records and what people who know you might tell them if the doctors bother to investigate that far), it is nevertheless the doctor's job to do a proper job of probing and, as the doctor I went to for my second opinion says on his blog, "to be a good reporter and ask follow-up questions." Otherwise, you just get a 15-minute session for diagnosis without properly hashing out all the information your patient is giving you vs. doing your darn job and really working to get a clear picture of what has been going on with your patient. As my doctor said, often the patient doesn't know what's all relevant and what's not; a patient often doesn't know what information they need to give for diagnosis.
