Thank you, Aunt, although I have no idea what a supertaster is.

genetically, there are a very few people gifted with many more taste sensors on their tongues which can pick up more flavors or are more sensitive to given amounts of flavor. that likely means your tongue is sensitive to/can taste salt, for example, where the rest of us are relatively insensitive to a tiny amount or can't taste it.

but no, you can't taste a little salt if you're used to using a lot

growing up, my dad, after the latest of several heart attacks, was on an enforced no-salt regimen, and we all [therest o us] ate the same no-salt diet so he wouldn't feel singled out. after several years of that, I never got the hang of tasting the "natural saltiness" of unsalted foods.

I seem to be one, Aunt, I can taste tastes that others don't think of. The strange taste of a lychee for instance.

Have to avoid sodium due to hypertension. I can definitely feel it when I sin and eat something really salty.

This past week was suddenly hot where I live. I didn't adjust my salt intake to match my water drinking, though, and by Sunday morning I woke up feeling awful (it's a particular type of "feeling awful" that I correlated over the last few years). By evening I was much better, having purposely ingested enough salt. I always forget I have to do that in the Summer.

Thanks JKrane, for the info about adrenal exhaustion. I have had a weak bladder all my life, and too much stress all my life, and have been a salt-aholic all my life. I am also on the spectrum. I guess this all ties in, at least in my case. I've tried no-salt, and low salt substitutes, but end up using more of them, because they aren't salty enough. I finally gave up on those. I am not fond of hot spices, but as I've gotten older, i've gotten to like having some spices, including a little bit of cayenne pepper in some foods. I also use loads of powdered garlic, and occasionally minced garlic. Don't care for onions, but do like BBQ sauce with tomato sauce in it. Last year I started adding cayenne pepper to my hard boiled eggs, on top of the salt and garlic powder. I think the eggs taste better now that I do. I also add the pepper to smashed taters, savory corn mush dishes, and some other starch dishes. I sometimes use Bullseye BBQ sauce on meats, and even the mild version already has some pepper in it, so I don't need to add more.

I've been a salt-aholic all my life, and never had a resting blood pressure issue until a recent doctor visit, and even then, it was only slightly elevated. I think there are people, like myself, whose biochemistry needs the extra salt. Don't know why, but I know I crave salty foods. I am not big on sweet foods, but do eat a lot of sweet fruits, and sweeter, but no sugar added fruit juices. This generally satisfies my taste for sweets, so I don't often eat cakes, cookies, etc.

I think you need to go by your own biochemistry, as to how much salt to consume.
