What is your first name? Alex

Age: 32

Location: East Coast, New England

Hobbies and Interests: “Physical sciences”, probability, game theory.

Why are you here? Since quitting buprenorphine (sublocade), I randomly tried 12-step groups even though I used to hate them and never went because I was in withdrawal at that point for 3 months straight, and didn't know what to really do. I'm even in professional outpatient programs after avoiding them for years, and got a case manager. (the recovery industry can be f****d up, especially for women.) Funnily enough, the recovery world is saturated by neurodivergence. I figure I can maybe share what I learned in these groups, that I'm guessing the majority of people here haven't seen, and it's helpful because I'm constantly around Neurodivergent people there, and I've learned the patterns.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Probably around 3 years old, had very noticeable physical symptoms like low muscle tone, couldn't speak well, ect. I still remember the physical therapy before I moved to my new house at four. My memory is of this rather empty warehouse looking place, that was styled similar to a discovery zone, with large mats, colorful designs on the wall (I remember the most a few large triangles on a yellowish wall) but it lacked crowds.

Favorite subjects: idk, I usually do not do the best in school, it's a very uncomfortable place for me, maybe I'll develop one when I go back.

Year/Grade: Some college… but I plan to go back... didn't get a good chance when I was 20, I was an opioid addict then, and it was chaotic. My parents I think enrolled me, I was on probation for heroin possession charges, and maybe they thought it would look good. Probation eventually dropped it, after I kept passing tests... but I was cheating them the whole time after previously being detained twice in jail for failing tests... which was a nightmare since it was more than a month of time, and they didn't give methadone, or Suboxone to inmates back then, so I had to do it cold. It was my only real brush with the legal system, I have a clean record since that was dropped.

Favorite music: Electronic, techno, psytrance, jam bands, old school rap.

Books: Greg Egan is fire. I had an amateur attempt at writing a book, which dealt with my views of survivalism, tied in with my views of the Social Darwinist nature of the human world, comparing it to the jungle of nature. I gotta finish it.

TV shows/Movies: Training day, Sopranos, the Wire. Definitely more too, depends on my mood.

Instrument: I can play keyboard a bit, I even have one, but I've been slacking practicing. Maybe I subconsciously see music the same way as in professional sports, a few make money, but most of them starve?

Do you like sports? I kinda like playing sports, especially with friends, pickleball is fun. Professional sports are pretty boring to me in general to watch, but I do see money in it. Idiots will gamble big on their favorite team, and I can see a profession being a bookie, reading the statistics, and exploiting it.

Family: 2 siblings, and my parents, who stayed together all this time.

Clothing: Usually whatever I can find. I remember driving two girls to New Bedford for something, and we randomly saw a church outreach giving away things, like clothes, hygiene essentials, food ect. Me and the other girl got redskins sweaters, mine's black, hers is red. My favorite clothes are psychedelic though, like tie-dye, I have a few Alex Grey shirts.

How did you find this website? I knew about from years ago, but I usually stay away from any forums.

Job: Not employed currently

Plans for the future? A normal enough life, I feel like I never had one. I've been on substances heavily since I was around 16 years old, only got off buprenorphine last September 2024, was on high dose Suboxone for a decade.

Age: 64

Location: Normandy - France

Why are you here? Hum, discovering my autism just now, after an Autistic burnout, and having several conditions (on spectrum, HIP, gay, gender dysphoria, ...), I would like to better understand which "weird things" in my life originate from which particular condition (or maybe they just indistinctly originate from the complete combo ?). Try also to better understand why it took 64 years to get in the first autistic burnout, which by the way is an "experience" I would recommend to nobody.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): under process...

Favorite subjects: on this forum : after an entire life of questioning who am i and seeing only fog inside, trying now to better understand with this new key, and possibly find people as weird as I am, to share more on all these questionings.

Year/Grade: PhD, Director of Research

Favorite music: calm music (of any kind)

Books: essays only

TV shows/Movies: no TV, no Movie, no Theater - too agitated and/or too verbose (I like silence so much)

Instrument: organ

Do you like sports? no, but I practice jogging, swimming more or less regularly

Family: separated, father of 2

Clothing: normal, trying to be reasonably elegant for the respect of others's eyes.

How did you find this website? an autistic friend told me: "gosh, there is a forum with exactly this name" when I said him that from the beginning of my life, I was totally sure to have been thrown on the wrong planet...

Job: retired (researcher in applied mathematics - numerical analysis)

Plans for the future? After a reasonable amount of achievements, finishing my life in the coolest way as possible, especially knowing my "new" condition, which I think makes possible some appeasement, finally.

Any comments? Hope I will find people seeing the world as I do, if possible.

Clothing: As much as I love bright colors, I’m deathly afraid of being perceived and judged so I stick to dark, bland outfits.

How I found this website: Feeling horribly nervous/insecure about an upcoming job fair I’m being forced to attend; googled “job fair anxiety with autism” and found an old thread on this site, which made me realize that I’m not the only neurodivergent person that feels like they’re from another planet.

Job: Currently unemployed, a full-time student.

Future plans: No clue, honestly. Too anxious to go out and get a real job, but I can’t keep leeching off my parents forever. I should probably start working on myself more lmao

Hello, everyone! I hope to meet some wonderful people!

What is your first name: Brienne

Age: 36

Location: Florida, USA

Hobbies & Interests: Too many to name. Dinosaurs and paleontology, birds and birdwatching, collecting quarters, playing video games, doing logic puzzles and riddles, trivia games, interior design, writing fiction and movie reviews, lucid dreaming, working out, my Christian faith

Why are you here: To talk to people and hear others' experiences, to engage in discussions on my favorite topics, and to share with others in a way that might offer some solace.

When were you diagnosed: ASD diagnosis February this year, 2025.

Favorite Subjects: I graduated from University in 2010 with a Bachelor's in English Lit with a Minor in Communications. So, English and Media are my favorites. I also took electives in History, Business, and Religion.

Year/Grade: See Above.

Favorite Music: 70s glam and punk rock as well as disco, 80s cheesey pop ballads and new wave as well as hair metal, 90s alternate rock/metal and pop princesses, 00s dance and pop as well as emo and more metal, any "one hit wonder" ever released

Favorite Books: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Jane Eyre, Little House in the Big Woods, Pilgrim's Progress, Beowulf, The Odyssey, The Metamorphasis, anything written by Philip K. Dick or Stephen King, anything written by Chuck Palanhiuk or Hunter S. Thompson, the Amelia Bedelia series, the Boxcar Children series, the Narnia series

TV Shows/Movies: Too many to name, but my favorite TV show is Lost and my favorite movie is The Matrix.

Instruments: Used to play drums when I was younger, looking to get back into it. I can play by ear.

Do you like sports: Only if, as pro wrestler Big E. put it, there are "big sweaty men slapping meat." So basically just gridiron football, MMA, and pro wrestling!

Family: I live with my parents, two of my younger brothers, a dog, and two cats.

Clothing: This is a tough one. I'm mid-gender transition and in the middle of a weight loss journey. So all my old clothes don't fit me anymore and I haven't gotten to get a new wardrobe yet. All my old "guy" clothes are mostly jeans and graphic tees.

How did you find this website: On an online list of autism resources.

Job: I'm unemployed right now, but currently working on getting a data-related job as work-from-home. My jobs in the past have all been retail-focused on selling particular products I like- usually electronics or food. But those jobs are too stressful and I never kept one for more than a couple years. Such is the case when you have undiagnosed autism and think you must just suck at everything.

Plans for the future: Find a partner to love and cherish, and either going back to school to get a Master's in Linguistics to enter the education field, or re-learning the drums to enter the music field.

Any comments: I miss forums like these. Not a lot of old-school style forums anymore.
