For a while I wanted to support the whole progressive agenda, nevertheless I believed that Bernie Sanders' blatantly Socialist program would never appeal to an electoral majority so I voted for Democrats who were somewhat closer to the center.
Since the failure of the Democratic Party in the 2024 election, I have come to re-examine a lot of that, and have become way more cynical. I can see that the Democratic Party's appeal is limited to wage earners, but they have nothing to offer to self-employed people and business owners, and the direction of the economy probably means the proportion of the electorate that are wage earners will decline. The alternative to the Democrats is Trump. I see him as a reality for the time being, but at the same time I get tired of the anti-Trump messaging that clogs my feeds as much of it is sensationalistic. I don't have much good to say about Trump (but then I also don't think he's totally evil) and I don't see how ranting about him on line or marching against him in public will do me or anyone else any good.
In the past, I tended to defend wokeism, but I've come to realize that, although woke people may have a valid message, the average voter really doesn't care about the feelings of people for whom gender identity is an all-consuming concern, etc. Also a lot of people who would be expected to embrace that attitude actually want no part of that. In the US, many POC and gay people are staunch Republicans. Seeing that, I can no longer be inspired by wokeism nor can I see an urgent need to return the Democrats to power.
One more thing is the recent world-wide outpouring of support for the aims of Hamas. I see no reason to admire them. I don't think the leaders of Iran, Russia, N. Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, etc. feel any genuine sense of solidarity or love for each other (I happen to think the Chinese leadership just takes advantage of that situation) but supposedly average people around the world all admire that group for its steadfast opposition to the US and Israel. At least since the Cuban Revolution, there have been "intellectuals" who admired anti-American dictators simply because they thumbed their nose at the US, but those people have failed to improve the lives of the people in the countries they rule. In particular, I totally support the aim of the State of Israel to continue its existence and the role of the IDF in furthering that aim (note I didn't say its "right to exist" because as Chairman Mao said all political power comes from the end of a gun) which means I am not an anti-Zionist and in particular I have no intellectual respect for anti-Zionist Jews. The truth is, although I accept the premise that the IDF has committed atrocities in Gaza, I blame the war there on Hamas. I also genuinely think the situation there would be worse than it already is had Trump not been elected. Most people would think of those as extreme right-wing views.
I hope this is clear.
