Wow, I haven't seen you in forever MissPickwikan. I remember hearing about this on the news and felt very sad about the lack of tolerance some people have. I hope stuff like this will not keep going on in our Bible belt. But despite the tragedy of this, I am still quite hopeful that society will be less psychotic about fanatic dogma and more tolerant. You are a very brave person to express this on WP and I hope you continue to stay strong through this tragedy.

Are you saying that the church was pro-gay and the killer was a homophobe? I used to live in Oak Ridge and there were several pro-gay churches in Knoxville.

The Unitarian church does other things than that, they're eco-friendly, 'liberal' in general and a bunch of other stuff that pissed off the right-wing. I know, I've been to one several times for a peace group that MEETS THERE (see what I mean?). I've been to some of their Sunday churches, seriously it's not surprising the right would be pissed at them.

Remember my father, who is a baptist minister who considered it 'not christian' as they don't consider jesus divine or something...

Has anyone got this guys real motives or are you going to keep attributing this guy as somehow being a conservative Christian?

Demonization of morally conservative Christians is highly annoying - it is actually hate speech if you care to look beyond your ignorance and shameless bias.

Last I heard the guy targeted the church because he felt it was full of "liberals", and bore some sort of grudge against same. Personally, I find cold hard logic to be the better solution to liberalism, hot lead is sort of like sandblasting a soup cracker.

Really? Was this from the offender or not?

Yeah, violence doesn't help anything political - not at this level at least. Conquering countries or defending one's land, that's one thing. But hunting down unarmed civilians is just wrong.

The offender had a four-page letter in his car detailing the reasons why he hated "the liberal movement." He wanted to kill the liberal politicians, he said, but he had to settle for killing the people who voted them into power, and the unitarian church seemed like a good place to start. The police interrogation logs are full of his liberal-bashing. Investigators confiscated works by Bill O'Reilly, Michael Savage, and Rush Limbaugh from his house. Anti-Christian hate speech? Um, we have evidence.

It wasn't all about gays as I had anticipated, though he apparently hates gays, too. His motive was hatred not for any specific minority group but for the ideals and opinions of all left-leaning people.

It hurts my feelings that you called the people on this thread (possibly meaning me too) "shamelessly biased." Most posters were here sending their condolences; the political stuff was about gun control, not religion.

I am really wondering if and when some of you will extract your heads from your butts and realize that this is about grieving. If a guy shot up a southern Baptist church near me, I would be pretty upset too.

Amendment I for me to then. If people can demonize Christians according to their own belief system, then Christians can judge and act according to their belief system.

Also, Amendment II: I have a Constitutional right to bear arms and form a militia.
