My apologies everyone for how long this took. Multiple things pushed this back. I am pretty sickly these days and not much energy even on my good days. I have Multiple Sclerosis and several back to back things happened where I had to fly out somewhere and it totally wiped me out. The migration from the old server was also especially punishing and difficult, largely the database migration and modernizing the deployment. Again, my apologies for the time this took.

It takes as long as it takes to get it working correctly.

Thanks for doing that.

Despite your own personal struggles, you volunteered your time and effort to ensure that this site wouldn't disappear for good. I have immense respect for your humility, but apologies are hardly necessary. You've been very generous. Thank you.

Thank you for finally getting it back online!! Between that and getting hacked out of my Instagram profile back in 2023 I felt like I was socially missing an arm and a leg :P

Thanks for bringing it back online thought it was gone!

Just to be clear - it is temporarily running on someones home server? and the discord was abandoned?
So no need to do anything to find it again?

Short answer is yes and no. So, full rundown. I am friends with the last hosting provider and was once an employee of that company. We were a small to medium sized provider, and our parent datacenter space provider was told at least renewal that the rates were going up dramatically. The owner of that hosting provider had to get all gear out and move every customer off in very quick time. We had been providing hosting for wrongplanet for free for some time, as one of our earlier customers (it wasn't always free, kind of just became free over years of relationship lol). The site was running on a dedicated server that was running quite old software, albeit, hardened to be somewhat safer, but still, scary old. Deploying things exactly as they were was a scary proposition, made scarier by the software vulnerabilities found by AI within a month after going down. I had decided early on we cannot launch exactly as we were even though that would have been the easiest way to go. I needed to port the platform to a modern docker compose setup at least and run the latest versions of everything the site depended on. This meant transferring this enormous database from ancient MySQL to modern mariadb.

I run 5 nodes in a datacenter, I own the hardware and manage them completely. I created a virtual machine for wrongplanet.net and got the skeleton of the website and what it needs into containers. From there it was a matter of migrating the SQL file onto the new daemon, but I had forgotten the formatting of these tables was mixed and there were lots of ways it could make the import not work, so I ended up needing to get the original server again even though it was yanked out of the datacenter already to do a more proper dump of the entire virtual machine with which to work with that database live to migrate it properly into new mariadb. I am providing hosting freely all the same. We aren't like, inside Amazon, but we also aren't inside my house lol

More changes coming, yet another migration at some point, but at least, next time, it will be done very fast, like less than an hour of switchover fast. We are due for new software, these boards are too old, and proper upgrading just is not feasible. These boards will continue running alongside the new site for a grace period likely to last some time as I know many like these boards. We are still in the planning phase.

Please, anyone with computer aptitude who might have an interest, join us on the discord. Nobody need be an expert, just a very basic understanding of Linux is enough.
