So they say. It's said that England is the most haunted place in the world. Even Roman ghosts have been reported.

It's all those wars the English had. Always seeking glory and competing with France, and later on Spain. It especially got bitter when they made their ridiculous claim to the French throne.

The Vikings believed ghosts stood up from their graves and were physical beings who could attack them (even come in flocks to do so) or spread plague. They believed them to be evil, dangerous and vindictive. (which kinda begets the question of what they had to be vindictive of, but yeah...)

In our folklore we also have draug, which could be both land and sea based, but for the most part I've heard of them being sailors who died at sea and come ashore to drag people put to the sea with them. I've read some scary (fictive) stories about them.

Borley Rectory was once considered the most haunted place in England.

I am ashamed to admit that I had to Google that. Akershus festning (a fortress in Oslo) is one of Norway's most well known alleged haunted places. No less than 13 ghosts are said to be there. Sadly, one of them is a dog.

Rahee Castle.

Whaley House.

Marilyn Monroe has been seen at about three of her favorite places in Hollywood.

I’ve heard those places are haunted (except for Rahee castle, which I’ve never heard of before). Another great alleged haunted place is Nidarosdomen in Trondheim (Norway), where a scary monk has been reported.

How about the abandoned Alcatraz prison? Alcatraz has been cited as one of the most haunted places in America.

Never been to Alcatraz.

Is it true that there were/are sharks in the water around the island, and that is why so few escape attempts were made?

That is likely more myth than fact.

There was one presumed successful escape in 1962, but the escapees were never seen again.
