Admit it, this is just a time enduringly fabulous game. Feel free to discuss mods or post links to good ones or just discuss strategy or appreciate this great game.

Can't exactly help you with technical related stuff, maybe others here can. Problem is with the east there is a lot of land so takes ages to get there and then the settlements are not very good also scythians and parthians are tricky until after the marius event.

I liked Rome: Total War a lot, but once I played the mod Europa Barbarorum (a mod which is focused on greater historical accuracy for the time period), I found the original game less enjoyable.

I did play that mod and agree entirely that it is very good, the only thing I found with that mod was the strange way recruitment worked and it was sometimes hard to tell which unit is good and bad.

i was nearly going to get "rome: total realism" but i lost my "rome: total war" cd case, and after i changed computers, i could not reinstall "rome: total war." (because i had no cd key)
also i got 2 separate viruses from cd crack sites so i dare not go those sites these days.

anyway, i liked the game (rome:total war) for a while. i vastly preferred it's real time battles to the turn based 2d aspect of the game.
they were amazingly realistic. the sense of scale and space and size of the battle fields was astounding. the mountains in the distance in some of the setting sere so far away, and i sometimes used to just run off to see how far i could go before i hit a limit (stuff the battle because i could reload it after i checked the scenery out).
i do not remember the game very clearly as far as game play is concerned because i played years ago (more than 3 and i have played many games since then).

but from what i remember, the game became a micromanagement headache after i conquered about 3/4 of the world represented in it.

i think there were "heirs" that were born (that baby crying sound with that music) and you had to wait until they were 16 so they could govern cities. i can not remember why they were useful. i think their attributes (military talent/commercial talent etc) contributed to the money generated by that city. also cities with governors could "auto govern".

anyway, at one point, there were not enough heirs being born and the old ones were dying and eventually most of my cities did not have a governor. every time an heir became of age (16) i would rush them off to the city where i wanted them to go, and it took too many turns to get them there and by the time they got there there were riots and other problems.

maybe i will attempt to find a cd key on line again with another computer i have that i do not care whether i get any malware on. i just looked at some youtube vids of rome total war and it has sparked an interest in me to play it again.
the youtube videos are low def, and i think i could record some smooth clear high def ones to post.

That is probably, if there was a problem, it. It can take an age to manage 50-80 cities, it can end up taking a whole hour for a turn and you end up thinking whats the point?

Come on... It's hardly a problem, besides, it's in the begining it's fun, when you have a small empire. :D

The trick is not to expand the cities to much, keeping the pop low keeps them happy.

I always leave the city for a turn or two then massacre it, it kills a few men but then I have a nice small city again.

some anti-virus programs will routinely give a false-positives on no-cd cracks. Its not usually anything to worry about.

That said, i rarely visit crack sites myself, as all my games come from demonoid.com & usually have cracks included.

I guess you're playing as roman, otherwise the Autoresolve is completly useless. I am currently playing as Carthage, and I have to fight every single battle, or I'll lose big time. When I fight I win with a few dead, the computor manage to get allmost the entire army killed and lose in the same battle.

I made my biggest ambush yet today, 1700 Longshields surpised a full Julii army (2800), I lost 300 and 30 of the enemy managed to get away. It was a lot of horses comming towards the enemy I can tell you. :D They weren't too keen to stick around and fight.

I allways prefer cavalry since I like to be able to move around fast. (And the Carthage infantry sucks exept for Sacred Band.)

(Level: Very hard, Very hard.)

That's asskicking. First time ever one of my units managed to get over 1 000 kills in one battle. :D
Unbelivebly humiliating loss.

Roman legionnaires still are the best at conquering, particularly the Urban Cohorts.

My fave faction was The Seleucid Empire. They had pretty much every unit you could think of! Hoplites, chariots, ELEPHANTS, armored camels, and excellent copies of legionaries....Not even the three main roman factions had that much variety!

I'm playing Empire Total War also, but it just isn't the same. Too many bugs. RTW was CA's masterpiece.
