Hey, my name is Rob and I am self diagnosed as of this evening. I have lived my life trying to figure out just what is wrong with me and trying, mostly in vain, to fix it. On a whim today I did a Google search on Aspergers, and came up with all of the social problems I have experienced my whole life. I'm 21 now, and I have been basically been miserable for the past 11 years. Not that that will change overnight, but at least I've finally found some answers.

I'm a bit dumbfounded that this was just a Google search away. Anyway I wanted to say Hi, and I was wondering who else has experienced this recently.

Welcome to WrongPlanet! :D By the way, how did you find WrongPlanet (was it in the google results you searched for or linked to by a site you found)?

I hope you like it here. I know I do. 8)

I haven't been DX'd with AS (that's website talk for I haven't been diagnosed with Asperger's) but I do have ADD. And I strongly suspect, based on the DSM IV criteria, that I have AS as well. I only found out about this site--and a lot more about Asperger's--three months ago.
It's amazing how different your life becomes when you learn this. It's like one piece puts the whole crazy puzzle together. It's still kinda chaotic, but now you know the origin of the chaos and can take steps to put order to it.
Welcome to WrongPlanet! :)

Yeah I went through a similar experience about 6 months ago... Really weird experience eh? Its actually not that surprising because Aspergers is just now starting to gain mainstream recognition in the pscyhiatric community.

Hi!

Yes, we are a real forum!

It sounded like you thought Regis Philbin was still on the air, and you had just won the top prize there for a second!

Welcome, Rob!

Lol larsen, yeah I don't really know why that title struck me, I guess this just all seems like some wierd joke. I can't believe I hadn't done this in high school, or earlier. Maybe it's just as well, I don't think I'll worry too much about that. I really appreciate the friendly welcome.

It is real. AS is real, and there's no way around it.

You will like it here, I know. There are people here from all over the world for you to meet. They are all unique in their own ways. Some have AS more than others, but we are a very open group, and you are welcome to post anything you desire within reason.

If you have ideas, we will take them into consideration. If you want to say hi, that is perfectly fine and at least several of us are around at the time.

We are all-around friendly!

That's kinda of how it went with me, only I was 24 and I was miserable since I was 12.

Isn't the feeling of joy and relief your experiencing right now ecstasy?

Well it's certainly an improvement. As much as I've always been miserable, I had always had some shred of hope that I could improve until I could be normal and socialize. These last few months I've gone from depressed and lonely to really bottoming out.

I feel so hardened after all these years of wanting to play a normal role in the social world that it's not extasy yet. I still want the same things now, I just have a better understanding of why I don't have them (and why everyone else does). For now I'm still completely in the mode of fighting the good fight. But holy crap it is amazing to have hope. And it's been like 2 days, so I still don't really know what to think.

Right I'm looking to meet a girl/guy with AS in the Hartford CT area.

Tue... as nutty as the whole deal is, I can't deny it logically. And logic's worked pretty well so far. Thanks for the welcome I, hope to be around more.

Hi Rob (TC784),

Welcome to WP. I went through similar when I self-diagnosed myself during my freshman yr of college (6 yrs ago). They're a great bunch of people here. I think you'll like what you read.

I was self-dx for 5 years before seeking/receiving an official diagnosis last spring. Do you have any thoughts about seeking an official diagnosis in the future? I know that it's not everyone's cup of tea of course. I sought an official dx myself because I'm venturing into speaking about issues in autism spectrum disorders and becoming an advocate.

If you'd like to e-mail me, my e-mail address is available at the bottom of my post.
