My son learned to avoid more than control. Perhaps a little bit of both, but keeping the number of sensory overload experiences to a bare minimum was the major change over time.
Seven is probably a good age for you to start teaching him to find his own solutions. Talk about the mornings with him and let him come up with some ideas on how to get it through it without so much frazzle from the other kids.
