Hi my name's Wendy... I've been a lurker here over the years and will probably still mainly lurk as I find that when I start talking on these sites it becomes a major obsession with me and eats up all my 'free time' of which i have none to start with unfortunately!! ! Anyway, I love this site nonetheless as I hear so many people's stories I can really relate to... maybe one day i'll have a bit more time to talk here.

Here's my story in short (I'll get all my blabbing out of the way in one hit)...
I recently (last year) had my 7yo son diagnosed with asperger's and as I read widely and visited discussion boards such as this one to learn about the condition (and autism generally - which i now find to be grossly misunderstood and misrepresented by the media etc...) it blew me away that I was not just seeing my son described but also myself.

I've always known i was different since early childhood and felt frustrated about being misunderstood for so long... often feeling like an alien. I have always come across as a shy, well-behaved perhaps slightly eccentric but basically normal girl so i think it was even harder for me to garner any sympathy from anyone about being different / misunderstood / stressed about living in a world that was created for everyone but me. i think my mum just thought i enjoyed being contrary... seeking out ways to be opposite to others on purpose and that i was a mental illness hypocondriac.. always trying to diagnose myself with one condition or another. And all this was probably true too. But it's a big relief to have finally found some kind of a 'lable' for want of a better word that actually fits and makes sense!! And it means i'm not actually going insane - hooray - and i can understand my son so much better!!

Could easily have loads more to say here but won't get started or i'll never stop and that would be very bad etiquette indeed for a first post!

Thanks again for all your discussions that i have enjoyed reading so much in the past... maybe i'll get to know some of you eventually.

Wendy
