I had an IBM T40 with all the upgrades and bells and whistles. Overall it was a great laptop (for it's time). It didn't seem to get to hot either which was nice. But one day, I tried turning it on and it wouldn't turn on. I paid 3,000 for it at the time (my first purchase with my first "real" job). That was a lot to pay but it did carry me for a long time. I tried some basic trouble shooting but I couldn't get it to come on.....I didn't have the money to purchase a nice laptop so I got the cheapest one I could find...

Dell Inspiron 1525
Pros: Looks nice
Cons: Runs too hot (I have to lug around a cooler), extremely reflective screen (if you are in the sun you are blinded), speakers are terrible (I can barely hear anything out of them on full blast...I don't expect home theatre sound but at least to hear a youtube clip. I have to pack headphones), touchpad is erratic (once in awhile become unresponsive - not a driver issue, no conflicts in the software), the laptop hinge is extremely loose (starting to crack the body of laptop)....

I looked at HP Elite but the screen size seems too small.....I don't think I would want to do lower than 15.4". I'm not a gamer but I don't want my laptop to bog down if I open an HD video clip. I want it to have good cooling (I don't want to lug around a cooling pad). It seems like the HPs don't run as hot as Dells. I want an excellent battery life etc etc (can you have it all?)....I like the idea of super light as long as it doesn't compromise too much on performance.

It seems like I research a bunch of laptops and read customer reviews and read about some common flaw in all of them ....so then I get confused.

What should my next laptop be?

Sorry this post is so long, I usually keep my posts pretty short.

Let me get this straight: it has to be light, not too hot, good battery life, really big screen, good speakers and decent performance... not asking for too much are you :P

Sorry, I do want it all I guess. The speakers don't have to be "bose" or whatever but I honestly can't hear anything out of my 1525....I have to put on headphone to even hear it. It would be nice if it didn't weigh more than 5-6 pounds.....I guess I don't want to buy another "lemon" like this Dell 1525....laptops are expensive....I want to be mostly happy with my next laptop.

Well, I've got a HP Pavilion dv4. It's been working decently for me. It's just over 5 pounds. It tends to overheat, but I encourage overheating. I play with it on my bed, so I enjoy the heat. The battery life is decent enough, then again I don't usually use it for more than 3 hours without charging. It tends to last the bus ride to and from school (45 mins each way) and the half hour in the morning I fool around with it without complaining, and still has some juice left.

It doesn't really fit your screen reqs. It's about 14" diagonal, but it's not one of those tiny ones I saw in Japan. I browse the internet on it just fine.

The speakers are nice, though. I can hear stuff with it fine, unlike my mac.

It doesn't usually bog down, except for right now. Which should tell you something; I'm downloading a CD to iTunes, listening to music, playing with powerpoint, and I have 21 Google Chrome windows open.

So, I guess I'd say this one is decent. Not perfect, but in the past 9 months, I wouldn't say it's a 'lemon'.

Well, you could go for one of the newer thinkpads. Like the T500 or R500 laptops. Both have widescreen 15.4 inch displays, and the wellknown thinkpad quality to the. I myself own an R400, wich is the 14-1 inch version

I thought about going back to Thinkpad. I had one when it was from IBM....is there any difference from when Lenovo acquired them?

Lenovo Thinkpads are very very well done, I had one at my last job, in fact everyone had one (100+ people), we moved them a lot every single day, very rugged.

Personally, I'd vote for a Macbook, but to each his own.

They make those out of white chocolate. I've eaten enough to recognize it when I see it.

not in 13 inch, only on 15 or 17", you'll have to shell out more.
