Does anyone watch this? My roommate just pointed out there is a guy on there that is both OCD and possible Asperger's. However, when I turned it on to watch I was horrified at how awkward the man was at life. Is this truly how most people with Asperger's act??

No I have never seen it. However it it's over dramatic and somewhat inaccurate, that is the entertainment industry for you.

I've seen it a handful of times. I think it's pretty accurate. But, that may be because I get so annoyed with people who go "so-and-so is soooo OCD" when they clearly have no idea of what OCD actually is. The guy does seem like he could be AS, but he is awfully strange looking (in his mannerisms and such). He probably has some co-morbid condition, though. That was mentioned a couple times (not during the AS conversation, but in the beginning of the show).

Yes I do, but I missed last night's episode--I'll have to watch it online.

Was the AS conversation then? It was not alluded to in previous weeks.

If it's the guy I think it is (I'll let you know), then IMO he has a bunch of other comorbid conditions, but not AS.

Of course, the whole thing is sensationalized, but believe it or not, from what I've read about "exposure and response prevention," the depiction of it is accurate. Horrifying, huh?

One of the participants reminds me way too much of someone I know. The look on her face when she's scrubbing her hands is exactly like the look he gets when he's doing the same thing. Scary. :(

MONIQUEIJ, I understand. I'm not one that ever watches TV. I have issues with focusing for 30 minutes on something that doesn't teach me anything. However, one of my roommates loves it!

Chronos, yes!

astaut, I agree. This guy seems very strange to have solely AS!! OCD has made it into the english vernacular to mean intensely scrutinizing. These people actually have OCD because they believe harm will come to them or others if they do not do something.

conundrum, Spoiler Alert!! Sorry about that. Yeah he is suggested to have it. From previous shows I would have thought he had a type of schizophrenia. I've been waiting for a good example to pop up but it hasn't... yet.

Ah, then it is the same guy! I need to go watch the episode right now. :)

Okay, just watched the episode.

Where the heck did the "Asperger's Disorder" pronunciation come from? It seems like the questions re: reading social cues, etc., just came out of nowhere.

I really, really, REALLY don't see that in Kevin at all. Granted, I'm not in that house interacting with him on a daily basis, so it's possible that the doctor sees something that's not apparent on the show.

Also, of course, I'm not a doctor.

However, I also saw elements of schizophrenia or some related disorder from the beginning.

For example, the magical thinking, which is central to his OCD, shows up a lot in schizophrenia and schizotypal personality disorder. As far as I know, not in AS.

I also see pressured speech with some very illogical-sounding statements. Again, usually in schizophrenia/schizotypal PD.

Am I totally off base here? Does anyone else who's been watching see AS traits in this guy? If so, what?

Btw. I don't mean to sound like I'm on a "high horse" here, nor do I claim to be making correct diagnoses--all of this is only IMO.

Conundrum, I agree with you. After dating my ex gf that eventually developed it, I see a lot of similarities with this guy. In one example he was explaining touching a bottle. He is a mathematician, so I thought maybe he was trying to explain a concept or theory I don't know of, but I think at the end of it he was confused to whether or not he touched the bottle.

Schizophrenia is what I saw in him too.
