Ditto this with my ten year olds. We tried working on it last summer, but they just weren't there yet. We'll be giving it another go this summer.
Congrats to your son! How awesome would it be just to send him off for a shower and to have him be able to do it independently! I can't wait until my sons can do that too.
We are taking small steps. It took half a year to let him wash himself using a picto sheet on which we had pictures which steps to take (first head, then shoulders etc.) And on the other side of this we had the steps he need to dry himself. After this was automated (he no longer need the sheets to remember) we could do a step back and just make sure he was not distracted by other things. (Remember him to finish etc)
But tomorrow was a big step ahead, we only put the clothes in place and he just did the rest without us.
