This morning our youngest son (7 years) who is diagnosed with autism did take a shower himself including drying himself. He was ready faster than when we help him

He's making good progress anyway these days, providing structure is doing him very well.

And he remembered to wash the hair down to the scalp and all the other parts? Lol, I think your 7 year old may be doing a little better than my 13 year old in this department ...

Yesterday my wife made a agreemenet with him that he would shower himself and that he would use a timer te be sure it would not take too much time.
This morming he remembered this all and started himself without the need for us to tell.

It just great to see him groing this way.

I remember when our son started doing this himself too. What a glorious moment. Hope heightens during those precious times. Well done.

My son reached for me and hugged me for the first time ever yesterday. It's great being a parent when things like this happen

Ditto this with my ten year olds. We tried working on it last summer, but they just weren't there yet. We'll be giving it another go this summer.

Congrats to your son! How awesome would it be just to send him off for a shower and to have him be able to do it independently! I can't wait until my sons can do that too.

Congratulations! I know how it feels when they can accomplish something that you think is almost too much for them. My son is almost 5 and he can almost dress himself. I also was just telling my husband that I can't believe how strong he seems like he is getting. He is supposed to have low muscle tone, (well, I know he did for a long time because he was so floppy) But now when I feel him he just feels so sturdy----His speech is also just taking off like crazy.

Sometimes I find that it is a real challenge to parent a child with AS, but it is these moments that give us the joy and the hope to keep pressing on!

We are taking small steps. It took half a year to let him wash himself using a picto sheet on which we had pictures which steps to take (first head, then shoulders etc.) And on the other side of this we had the steps he need to dry himself. After this was automated (he no longer need the sheets to remember) we could do a step back and just make sure he was not distracted by other things. (Remember him to finish etc)

But tomorrow was a big step ahead, we only put the clothes in place and he just did the rest without us.

Aww, a timer? Showers are so relaxing, I would live in the shower if I could find a way to make it practical.
