At work they are introducing a special constable where council member can work with the police on the beat part time. Special constables are like policemen without any power of arrest etc. http://www.safermerton.org.uk/index.php?id=61

I know that policing is one of those jobs that aspies are suppose to be bad at because of the need to communicate with the public etc. But this could be the opportunity I have in order to improve my communications skills and get other stuff too.

What do you think?

I think theres no such thing as a job an aspie is bad at. Less of that pretentious 2nd hand talk down from the medical heirarchy you listen too the better, you make your own fate and the choice of career is your own.

What kind of opportunities do you get with that kind of job? From what ive gathered most of the people who end up in that kind of job are wannabe police officers anyway and take their current job too seriously because they have a tiny ounce of power (amazing what a uniform can do to peoples mentality)

If you want to do it its up to you, maybe you can ask to shadow one for a day or something like that have an observation experiance as it were.

I say, do it. It's a chance to work on your communication skills without the pressure of having to decide whether or not you should pull your gun out and shoot them. I think it would be good for you. And you don't have to do it forever if you don't want to. I know if I had the opportunity to do those things but I could only do it with handcuffs and a gun, there'd be a lot of injured or arrested people.

Police in the UK don't routnely carry guns anyway (apart from at airports; central London and particularly violent parts of the country like Nottingham and Northern Ireland).

If you've given it a lot of thought and you really think you can do it, why not?

Robin Williams once said that police in England don't carry guns, "so, if you commit a robbery, they yell 'STOP', or I'll say 'STOP' again!" Whereas here in the land of the Hern-Hern, it's a different story.

Great to see that people like us are getting opportunities to help our communities in the field of law enforcement.

I don't like cops at all tbh.
Most of them sit theyr ass into a car all day long while a camera is taking pics of people driving a bit too fast.
At the end of the day they put that into the computer.
And usually they've robbed a few hundred people of a few hundred thousend euros.
You have to watch it badly to not get fined for speeding here.
And yet only like 100.000 out of 1.300.000 actual crimes get solved.

Seems to me theyr kind of the opposite of robin hood.
Robbing the normal people so the state can buy brand new modern cameras to steal even more of those same people.
So i hate cops with a passion 8)
and i don't even have my lisence yet lol.
I should in a few months though 8)

no, and more likely than not they will try to use 'less-than-lethal weapons' against you so you don't die (eg you have a knife and you are standing in the street threatening to cut someone (usually people that are crack addicts etc))

This seems to be exactly like a TV pilot called Special Unit in which they let someone with aspergers be a special police cadet for the LAPD.

Not at all, they will use non-lethal weapons in those cases. Only if someone is threatening them or the general public, will they shoot. Usually, the gun is used as the last resort. Nobody wants to have to live with the fact that they shot someone, even police officers. I have a few friends who are former officers, and I've gotten a lot of insight into what they do.
