My laptop has never been good, considering it was expensive. Something terrible has happened to the 'Hard Disc', where it is saying all of this garbage on start up about storing my files, and that I need to replace the Hard Disc. What is wrong? What do I need to do?

Well, the hard disk is the thing in your computer that stores all your files. Meaning anything you had on the hard disk is probably kaplunked by now. As the computer says, you need to change this part. if the warranty is stuff in effect, you can just send it in and let them worry about it, but your files are most likely gone.

What model is your computer? and what brand?

When does this happen? Is it before or after Windows starts? What affect is it having on the performance of your computer and what exactly is it you're trying to fix? Be a little more specific.

You could get a new HD and look at data recovery then ask them to put the files they managed to recover on a external HD. I also had a quick look at this try this to see if it helps: http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page

I have backed all files to a USB, which is fortunate. The Hard Disk may need to be replaced...
The warranty has expired....
My laptop is an ASUS. I am unsure of the model.

Replacing a hard disk in a laptop is very easy. There are places on the underside where direct access leads to an upgrade part.

If the hard drive is screwed, it may be hard to recover data from it. but you may need to use the restore disks to bring it to factory settings - providing your retailer provided discs and not just a crummy image in the hard drive you can never access. (not the average user anyway)

I was told replacing the Hard Disk is expensive. Is it?

No. You should be able to get a very decent capacity laptop hard disk for under a hundred NZ$.

Physically replacing the disk is usually very simple, as Keith says. Reinstalling the OS is more involved, it depends on what recovery media you got with the laptop.

Hey guys, computer illiterate people can't replace hard drives by themselves. That's like attempting to convince an obese person to run.

Just find an small computer repairing business that isn't anything like Geek Squad and ask them to back up your stuff and replace the hard drive. You should be good.
