This discussion is for people under the age of 14 (and perhaps over the age of 10), any person found to be over 14 will suffer dire consequences.

After contemplating on the topic, I think that vocabulary is quite controversial with people living with AS. I know many people with AS that know less words than many NT people, but also, many people on here (mainly adults, I think) have enviable vocabularies. I think that my vocabulary is OK when writing, but I usually do not use extremely complex words when speaking, as this is rather odd. Also, my spelling is perfect.

I, would simply like to know if many other under 14's have exceptional vocabularies. For trivial sakes, simply write down one of the following - Poor - for a poor vocabulary, Moderate - for a moderate or average vocabulary, Good for a good vocabulary and Exceptional - for an utterly rich vocabulary (I highly doubt any children have a vocabulary this rich).

Thank you, WP.

Good to Exceptional

For me, my vocabulary comes from my environment. My family is not very TV oriented and we all read for pleasure and discuss what we read.

I also have a thing for words I have never seen before. I have to go look them up as soon as possible or I get cranky. I also read online often and I use the Google Dictionary Extension now so if I am reading something and I encounter a word I do not know, I can check it immediately.

When I started my Jasper's Boy blog I did not mention my age and after a month or so, something came up and I mentioned my age and several people who follow it used the comments to say they were surprised that I am a kid.

I'd say my vocabulary is moderate or good. I learn new words by reading things on the Internet or in games and if I don't know what some words mean, I look them up. I also play word games such as Scrabble sometimes.

This is also a good indication of modesty.

I think that my vocabulary is more British than American (I reside in New Zealand, despite my 'Location' on my profile).

Brits tend to have larger vocabularies as it is a test result that on average, Brits read more than Americans, and also, most dictionaries were written and usually published in Britain (Oxford in general). My writing style suggests a Brit, and I have been falsely accused of this many times.

So, this above paragraph has sparked a new question - Is your writing style British or American (even if this is contrary to your nationality).

Between Good and Exceptional. I tend to use more "complex" words when speaking, doing schoolwork, or talking to people I know than when posting on WP. I know the more imbecilic people my age tend to respond to me with, "Um, whattt? You use big words..." Plus, it depends upon the vocabularies you are comparing your own to. My vocabulary is beyond 'exceptional' when compared to that of a two-year-old child, yet it could just be considered 'moderate' when compared to that of, say, an English professor.

Oh, and I would say that my writing style is far more 'British' than 'American'. I'm not sure if others would agree, however; that is just my own self-evaluation.

My vocabulary is good but sometimes I talk using slang words just for fun.

Ha. Exceptional.

People are always saying to me I used too many long words :D
It doesn't help that my best friend isn't gifted in the area of vocabulary. (Incidentally, she is dyspraxic and dyslexic). I said that doghnuts weren't my ideal snack, as they lacked nutritional substances. And she looked at me like I'd just spoken in pig latin.
lol :D

Good-Exceptional

I tend to use words that my peers don't know...

Most adults consider my 13 year old son's vocabulary to be exceptional. Like Mosh, he tends to use words his peers don't know. My son gets a kick out of stumping his peers that way.

In contrast to the OP, my son is more likely to use his vocabulary verbally than in writing, and that is probably due the existence of co-morbids that have hindered his writing and spelling. Putting what he knows onto paper is a very challenging and frustrating task.

In my year 6 report(in 1998 at a regular middle school) was written that I have a vastly over average vocabulary :)

I think my vocabulary is good to exceptional, since I lean towards using big words which no one understands (my mum usually just repeats the big word in shock or to show someone else in the room what she has to deal with) and do pretty well at Free Rice, and I tend to use British English (being a Brit), although I sometimes use Americanisms.
