The crazy people from Westboro Baptist "Church" are in town tonight to picket a candlelight vigil for a ten day old baby who died just a few days back. They will be here in less than an hour. I can see the vigil/protest area from the window of the building I work in. These people are completely disgusting. They were just out her a few days ago to picket a twenty three year old soldiers funeral. Strangely enough, the tires on their van were slit and all local repair shops refused to fix their vehicle. Now who would do that to such lovely people? Total sarcasm there, folks. If you want to see the story, just type "WBC protest McAlester soldier funeral" and it will give you a run dwon of the happenings. These people truely make me sick.

Two words:

Sniper. Rifle.

Although given, it would be hard to smuggle it into your work, but the window gives you a perfect vantage point. Do us all a favor and delete this man.

I talked about a baptist on a similair line in another topic (link) plus some insider information concerning Matthew Shepard and WBC 'informing' the students of the University of Wyoming. Roxas_XIII was the OP on that topic.

If this link to Wikipedia is right:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church
Then I know we have some cookes here in the Netherlands, but nothing compared to these people.

Cheerfully,
Wallourdes

Picketing the funeral of a TEN DAY OLD? Don't these crazies have anything better to do?

I've said this before, I shall say it again. It's morons like these that make Christianity look really bad.

Well, I don't like them either, but I support their right to do what they are doing, not what they are actually doing. The case that is at the Supreme Court, with that soldier and his father, I think he went to my high school. I know there was a Snyder that went to my high school, and my friend was upset that WBC was coming to picket it. I just can't remember his first name. Was it Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder? I don't remember. I remember it was Lance Cpl though.

Yes, it was Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder.

And I only really dislike them because they try to connect themselves with my faith and then do really stupid things. A lot of my Christian friends wonder why the world hates us, and these guys are obviously part of the equation...

They really are disgusting, as this is their way of retaliation for having their tires slashed during that funeral.

I personally don't believe they are Christian/Baptist or any religion for that matter. Have you ever looked up the court cases against this group? There are a tremendous number of lawsuits made BY the WBC. And when you look up the background of the church members, it's pretty much one bloodline who make up to entire congregation. Of those members, it's interesting to see how many of them have legal backgrounds/degrees. They do this because they can get away with it and they are hoping to be able to sue the living heck out of people. What better way to get people riled up then stepping on an American flag at a soldiers funeral or holding up picket signs with whatever hateful slogan you can think of while families are mourning and emotionally unstable. They are hoping some poor guy who just lost his child will walk up and punch one of them in the face so they can get him arrested for assult and sue the city for not providing adequate policing and allowing people to infringe on their First Amandment rights at their "peaceful" protest. These people are a total joke. They believe that every single religion, including Baptist churches that are no the actualy WBC, are wrong, evil sodomists and that every single bad thing that happens in the United States is because of the US's overall acceptance of homosexuality. Oh, and apparently they have branded Obama the antichrist. They are morons, plain and simple.

Anywho, I drove by the Community Center after work to see what was going on and I didn't see the crazies out there. I was actually surprised that there was not an overwhelmingly large number of citizens at the vigil. I think that's a good thing. Not about the poor little baby, but the fact that the majority of the city was aware of the visit from WBC and decided to not even acknowledge their presence. I think that is what needs to be done. Stop with the television and radio interviews, stop with the counter protests and stop with the media acknowledging their protests at funerals and whatnot. Once they receive no more attentions, maybe they will just go away.

Wishful thinking...

They are trolls... pure and simple.
They're trying to push the envelope by targeting funeral's of children in OK.
Get people riled up as much as possible and counter-sue anyone who attacks them. Same strategy as always...

I'll go ahead and quote Gandhi on this one.

I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.

Just a minor correction, that particular incident that that topic was about was not the WBC, it was a smaller, less infamous but equally intolerant group called Shawn the Baptist. I actually only lived in Laramie since the summer of 2009, so I wasn't present for the whole Matthew Shepard deal, although I have heard the story firsthand from various people who were here. Also I work for the campus newspaper, the Branding Iron.

We always have people preaching here and there in the public forums around campus, but when these people start being intolerant and insulting to other people's lifestyles and religions, things tend to get heated, as was the case with the secularist counter-protest, and what was also the case with the WBC and the LGBTQ group on campus during Shepard's funeral: the latter dressed as angels with halos and massive 12-foot wings and surronded Phelps and his hate-mongerers, shielding him from view.

A lot of people pegged Laramie and most of Wyoming as being intolerant because of the whole incident with Matthew Shepard, but having lived in this town, I beg to differ. If anything we came together both when it came to Shepard as well as other incidents, and spoke out against intolerance. Oh, and for the record, Fred Phelps is prohibited by city ordinance from protesting within the city limits. He can stay in the city as long as he keeps his mouth shut, but any controversial action on his part and the Laramie Police have full authority to chase him out of town. Sure it violates his First Amendment rights, but I think by now the one group in America who could have possibly abused their right to free speech to the point of revocation is the WBC.

And keep in mind folks, as a journalist I tend to stand by the First Amendment no matter what, but in this one and only case, any politician with the cajones to shut Fred Phelps up for good deserves my vote for anything.

No wonder people hate Christians, so much.
