I talked about a baptist on a similair line in another topic (
link) plus some insider information concerning Matthew Shepard and WBC 'informing' the students of the University of Wyoming. Roxas_XIII was the OP on that topic.
If this link to Wikipedia is right:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_ChurchThen I know we have some cookes here in the Netherlands, but nothing compared to these people.

Just a minor correction, that particular incident that that topic was about was not the WBC, it was a smaller, less infamous but equally intolerant group called Shawn the Baptist. I actually only lived in Laramie since the summer of 2009, so I wasn't present for the whole Matthew Shepard deal, although I have heard the story firsthand from various people who were here. Also I work for the campus newspaper, the Branding Iron.
We always have people preaching here and there in the public forums around campus, but when these people start being intolerant and insulting to other people's lifestyles and religions, things tend to get heated, as was the case with the secularist counter-protest, and what was also the case with the WBC and the LGBTQ group on campus during Shepard's funeral: the latter dressed as angels with halos and massive 12-foot wings and surronded Phelps and his hate-mongerers, shielding him from view.
A lot of people pegged Laramie and most of Wyoming as being intolerant because of the whole incident with Matthew Shepard, but having lived in this town, I beg to differ. If anything we came together both when it came to Shepard as well as other incidents, and spoke out against intolerance. Oh, and for the record, Fred Phelps is prohibited by city ordinance from protesting within the city limits. He can stay in the city as long as he keeps his mouth shut, but any controversial action on his part and the Laramie Police have full authority to chase him out of town. Sure it violates his First Amendment rights, but I think by now the one group in America who could have possibly abused their right to free speech to the point of revocation is the WBC.
And keep in mind folks, as a journalist I tend to stand by the First Amendment no matter what, but in this one and only case, any politician with the cajones to shut Fred Phelps up for good deserves my vote for anything.
