Christmas is a feast of listening: medieval and Renaissance music from my collection, popular old Christmas records from my parents' attic (a circa 1965 Firestone Tires giveaway album is my favorite), spoken word recordings of A Visit from St. Nicholas, A Child's Christmas in Wales and A Christmas Carol and on Christmas Eve, Cambridge University's Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on the radio. Most of the year, music is just in the background, but give me some eggnog to drink and Christmas lights to watch and I'm all ears.
Everyone in my family is so jaded that token presents are all I give--or expect to get. Actually, I already have my not-so-token gift--a new, but incredibly retro 80's style boombox with built-in "disco" lights and cassette player/recorder! I kinda feel this has been sitting in a warehouse somewhere.
Our traditional Christmas dinner is standing rib roast, potato, peas, citrus salad. The only variable is the flavor of pie for dessert--this year it's blueberry. The best part is cold roast beef sandwiches in the evening and the next day.
