I'm a little bit obsessed with this. You can accept songs like this as secular love songs, i.e. Take That talking about a woman (or man), how boring and cliche. But if you imagine this as a song to 'God', a higher intelligence, or a spiritual guardian then it's much more interesting. At least in my eyes (ears).

When the time gets near
for me to show my love
The longer I stayed away for
Hiding from a word I need to hear now
Don't think I'll hear it again
But the nights were always warm with you
Holding you right by my side (right by my side)
But the morning always comes too soon
Before I even close my eyes
All I do each night is pray
Hoping that I'll be a part of you someday
All I do each night is think
Of the times I closed the door to keep my love within
If you can't forgive the past
I'll understand that
Can't understand why I did this to you
And all of the days and the nights
Ok I'll regret it
I never showed you my love
But the nights were always warm with you
Holding you right by my side (right by my side)
But the monring always comes too soon
Before I even close my eyes
All I do each night is pray
Hoping that I'll be a part of you someday
All I do each night is think
Of the times I closed the door to keep my love within
Surly we must be in sight
Of the dream we long to live
If you stop and close your eyes
You'll picture me inside
I'm so cold and all alone
Straight on back to me
All I do each night is pray
Hoping that I'll be a part of you someday
All I do each night is think
Of the times I closed the door to keep my love within

Please post songs that could conceivably contain non obvious spiritual or religious undertones/subtext/alternative meaning.

Really, this is just an excuse to post Take That songs. I'll probably look for non Take That examples later, it's just that these guys seem to have a rich back catalogue of the kind of thing I'm talking about.

"Could It Be Magic"

Spirits move me, every time I'm near you
Whirling like a cyclone in my mind
You're my life line, angel of my lifetime
Answer to all answer I can find

[CHORUS:]
Baby I want you come, come, come into my arms
Let me feel the wonder of all of you
Could it be magic now, now, now and hold on fast
Could this be the magic at last

Baby take me high upon a hillside
High up where the stallion meets the sun
I could love you build my world around you
Never leave you till my life is done

[CHORUS]

Spirits move me every time I'm near you
Whiling like a cyclone in my mind

[CHORUS]

Obvious one, if only to stem the tide of TT. :P

Lots of people think this is about god but it seemed more about a relationship to me.

 Hmm, TT makes Pi. Interesting.

That's a perfect example. Thank you! Great song too.

I could imagine that this one was about missing the 'love of god'. Thanks nick!

Back for another piece of TT. I've always thought this song has a blatant double meaning!

"Honest Questions" - Daniel Bedingfield

This song doesn't reference God directly, but it is undeniably spiritual and personally, I don't know how this song could be interpreted as being about anything but God.

Good posts gang! Keep them coming :)

To be honest, I'm now hearing every song through this filter. Very few don't seem to have some kind of spiritual meaning

I'm now interested in songs that may refer to the cycle of death and rebirth (aka reincarnation). Daniel Beddinfield seems to refer to it in "Honest Questions" so that's interesting;

Quote:
Oh look down and see the tears I've cried
The lives I've lived
The deaths I've died
You died them too
And all for me
And you say:

I'll save you the Take That version of this song.

Baby, I'm back
And right away I had come to you
To see if the love that we knew before
Had passed the test of time, ooh
Time, it changes almost everything
And sometimes lets us see the better side
Of the feelings we once shared
So baby,

Let's go round again
Maybe we'll turn back the hands of time
Let's go round again
One more time
Let's go round again
Maybe we'll turn back the hands of time
Let's go round again
One more time, one more time, one more time
One more time

Now baby, I know that you think I
will be different now
Inside of me nothing has changed
So I'm asking you again, ooh
Please, no one else that could
have brought me back
No one could ever change, or the
memory I kept within my heart

Chorus

It could be in reference to the holy trinity. In the song, she said "I want the whole wide world to know". This could be talking about going out as a missionary. And, "they read the good book from fri' to monday." And, "I got a dream house I'll build there one day".

Could be talking about God and falling away from him/her.

About Jesus.

There's a band I like called Need to Breathe. They're on two different record labels, one secular and one Christian. I like their music. Here are a couple of their songs. My favorite is the first one.

I also like this one. It's an older song and it was quite a few years before I realized it was a Christian song, or at least that it was played on Christian radio.

I always interpreted the "lives I've lived/deaths I've died" part to mean spiritual and emotional tragedies, and the "you died them too/and all for me" meaning Jesus experiencing life and (literal) death on Earth.

Know what would be funny? Songs that are normal, but could be taken as a schizophrenic person talking.

This post reminds me of that South Park episode where Cartman started a Christian rock band called Faith +1 & he changed the lyrics of popular love songs to make em about Jesus. He got a Mer album
