I've been told today that Aspies don't smoke. I don't, I never felt the 'need' to try and fit in in school - could that explain it?

I've never heard that. I've never been interested in smoking though I was around it quite a bit as a small child.

As an ex-smoker...that ones new to me.

I would say IF (that's a big if) aspies are less likely to smoke it may be down to lack of social pressure to try, and maybe even an ability to see through the social conditioning smokers have to go through to keep them smoking i.e. 'I need it to relax' 'It helps with stress' 'social occasions aren't as good without it' 'quitting is difficult' - without such conditioning or the idea of needing smoking as a social crutch smoking addiction would be easier to overcome, just look at Easyway.

But I'd still say it's BS.

The rate of smoking could be less in AS for sure but that doesn't mean that NO aspies smoke.

I, myself, don't smoke. I know very few people who smoke, but I know quite a few people who have tried it and they say that it's disgusting and I believe them. Also, even if I want to, I have no way of getting cigarettes. It's illegal for someone under 19 to buy them here and I have friends that are over 19, but they don't smoke and I don't think they'd buy cigarettes for me if I asked.

I also don't do drugs or drink. I mean, when I turn 19 (The legal drinking age here), I might have a drink or two at special occasions, but I don't see myself being a real "drinker" or anything.

I know plenty who smoke.

I have smoked in the past as well, but never been addicted. Just did it to help alleviate boredom whilst drinking with people.

Outside the diagnostic criteria,
I laugh aloud at flat statements proclaiming that
Aspies do X,
and don't do Y.

People apparently think everyone who isn't NT has a hive mind.

Oh Bethie, you're always there at any occasion to cry wolf.

I agree with the OP, it makes sense that many Aspies wouldn't smoke, one reason being that they might be smart enough to know it's damaging to your health, and they may be less likely to try to impress people by doing it.

there was a thread here a while back about smoking - I don't care to look it up - but plenty of WPers smoke or used to smoke.

Whoa there!
So anyone who smokes is too stupid to know it's damaging to health, or do it to impress people, REALLY?!

Smokers are more aware than anyone how much smoking damages health because smokers are living with the ill effects on a daily basis.
There is not just the constant knowledge that this addition that you hate so much it makes you cry is going to kill you one day. Try feeling like you're having a heart attack every time you move, getting out of breath just getting into bed, feeling violently ill 24/7 or having a simple cold put you in hospital several times a year. There's nothing impressive about that.

Smokers aren't stupid, they're addicts who one day made the same mistake that millions of other people did; to try smoking once and falsely thinking that it tasted so foul they'd never get addicted.

I don't smoke...tried it, but thought better of it. However, I'm pretty sure my dad is also an Aspie, & he used to smoke. He started as a kid (people in his age group often did), & smoked until he was in his 50s. I hated the fact that he smoked (had tons of sensory issues because he did). I finally got him to stop smoking by explaining how much money he lost in a year simply by lighting up. Most people can't quit cold turkey successfully, but he did. So yes, I believe Aspies can smoke.

Aspie Score: 173/200, NT score 31/200: very likely an Aspie
5/18/11: New Aspie test: 72/72
DX: Anxiety plus ADHD/Aspergers: inconclusive

If, by that, you mean I have no qualms calling BS on simplistic claims made about diverse groups of millions of people.
Stereotypes hurt everyone,
all the more so when they're founded on not a shred of empirical data,
but are instead the result of one or several idiots opining about the extrapolative meaning of phenomena in their own lives.

If you have something else to say to/about me, we can take it up in private.

QFT.

I'm also baffled at dunbot's implication that Aspies are more intelligent than NT's.

Good. :D

Sorry for the diversion from the topic at hand, all.
