Dunno if this is the place to ask or not?

I often "lurk" on the chat/irc #wrongplanet channel

However, when I try to join this these days I get...

#wrongplanet You're banned from that channel

Now I say very little (if anything), so why would I be banned :-(

Any ideas.

My faith in wp.net has expired as a result.. I did nothing wrong.. yet I am banned. WHY!

Thank you.

The answer is the ban list :-)

Use the "lightweight" client to connect - then you get...

#wrongplanet You're banned from that channel

The reason for this is simple. The client is hosted at "underdoghosting.com". Look at the ban list on #wrongplanet, and you will see this entry..

#wrongplanet *!*@ud02.underdoghosting.com jman_!n=jmantra@monrovll-cuda1-69-164-1 ... elphia.net 1153793040

Therefore any user (regardless of Nick) connecting from the website "lightweight" client will be banned.

Use the "Java" client (if you can), and you are seen as connecting from your own IP address. Which of course won't be in the ban list. So it will work.

Someone has obviously mis-behaved using the lightweight client, and therefore one of the IRCops
(man_!n=jmantra@monrovll-cuda1-69-164-18 ... elphia.net) has decided to ban all users/nicks from that address (ie the *!*)

Thus breaking the lightweight client on wrongplanet.net

Cheers

The real reason:

The cgi client used to have your ip encoded as as the username. This is no longer working. I blame................. YOU, ALEXANDER PLANK!

But even then, a ban for *!*@ud02.underdoghosting.com on #wrongplanet would still prevent you from connecting would it not.

The *!* in the above ban represent nick/user. Ie Nick!user@host

So even if your IP was encoded in the USER name, then you would still appear as nick!xx.xx.xx.xx@ud02.underdoghosting.com. Where xx.xx.xx.xx is your own IP address.

Of course if your IP was encoded into the HOST name, then things would be very different indeed :-)

Although, one of the reasons I used the simple web client was to mask my IP. Just saved boucing my IRC client connections off another machine elsewhere ;-)
