Aspie House

I'm putting my neck out here with a new idea.

I was thinking about a house for people with Asperger’s who strive toward independent living. I own an 8 family house in NY that I could use for this purpose. There are one and two bedroom apartments. I can work with housing assistance programs if necessary.

There is also a 4 year college 5 minutes from my apartment house for those who would like to start or continue their education.. Maybe even having a therapist on site who specializes in Asperger’s would be helpful. There’s a large backyard and a hiking trail behind the house. A basketball court is right across the road.

Please do not be too harsh on me. I come up with ideas that are new. There are a lot of aspies that are alone who don’t have a handful of close relationships that they need. For those aspies who are happy being alone, this may not be something you’d be interested in.

I’m just trying to create a more stable group system in a safe environment for us.

Some may say that aspies would never get along. I disagree. My sister and I are both aspies and everyone envied our relationship. We were best friends. She moved to Europe with her new husband. My boyfriend, also an aspie, is someone I love very much.

Anyway, I’m throwing this idea out there. Looking for feedback. You can add to this idea if you’d like to enhance it to make it more suitable for you.

Summer....I think this is a great idea...if I wasnt so old and settled in my life I think I would love to live in such an environment.I read alot of books about "communes" that went horibly wrong but that was usually because the drugs made people selfish and lazy.....I think one important factore would be realizing that all people with aspergers are unique...some may get along better in such a setting then others....but I think all those details could be worked out....Sounds great...

great idea! what would be the criteria for living there? (obviously you'd have to get yourself there?) most group homes here you have to meet strict mental qualifications, and there ususally not to great. i got acepted into one grouphome here but the rules of living there were wack. like i was prescibed some medications awile back for my "mental problems" and i had to take them to live there.

Awww, that's such a good idea.... Too bad I live in loser England, so I won't be able to show up or anything.... It would be good if this idea got mentioned to a society so that if they thought it was good and they got the fundings, then maybe it could go a little bit more worldwide.......
Course, there's me hoping. You'll have to keep us posted on how well it goes!

I have to agree with the others it's a great idea!

I have my own place in Europe but I think it would be nice to live close to other aspies. I dream of a community of people with aspergers, where you can get help and support but also live alone and have your privacy. For extra rent you could get someone to clean your house, take care of your bills, there would be a cafeteria where you could buy three meals a day. Many aspies that are forced to live at home could move out.

Go for it, I'm sure you could find someone in your area. It sounds perfect for young people with aspergers.

There are 3 places to eat. Someone could get a breakfast or deli sandwich at a mini deli. There's a pizza place. And a restuarant. All within a minute walk. There's a laundry place 4 buildings away. Antique shops. And it's a relatively small town where you can take a walk on the sidewalk down the street.

I've had this apartment house for 3 years now and it's done well business-wise. But, I want to use it for something better.

This is a great idea that has been brought up before... very generous of you to offer your house. We could get some of the more technically minded types here to wire and network it to the Nth degree!!

I am also a Registered Nurse so I have the license to run a group home...if it turns out that it would be defined as such.

I think that medications would be optional for people. Not mandatory. I can't even prescribe them anyway. I just have the license to montor them with consent from a client.

Each person would have their own apartment. With access to resources and the ability to bond with each other. That's what I hope.

People would need an awful lot of privacy. We couldn't crowd too many of us together. There must be an ideal square foot per aspie ratio yet to be determined.

The 1BR apts are about 550 square feet.
The 2BR apts are about 1000 square feet

Yeah, it's in the early stages. I just wanted to see what people would say about it and see if anyone has any ideas to improve my idea. Any info regarding permits and insurance would be helpful for me to get it going.

And a healty response to this thread helps  cause I wouldn't start the heavy research into getting this going (calling the town, ect) unless I knew that aspies would want something like this.
