I often wondered this. It's about time I asked it. Why are there so many bitter-seeming atheists on WP? Whatever happened to the nice atheists who don't belittle Christians for believing in something that can't be objectively proven?

Is that a can of worms I hear being opened?

One of us found cause for shifting to theist. There are actually more around than you might think. But people who are friendly, polite, interested in others ideas even do they not concur, are easily drowned out in some venues.

I think there has been a christian-atheist flame war on the internet for several decades now.

But as to your point. What happened to the nice, quiet christians who drank steaming cups of stfu and never bothered anyone with their beliefs? What happened to the quiet house negroes? They were so meek and helpful. Oh, the golden age. Gone forever.

Positive verses Negative atheists...

...well I'm a nice atheist (negative atheist), but then I'm also a religious atheist so not sure I count.

I could argue for why there are more atheists amongst aspie/autistic people in general, some such argument about religion being illogical (although that's a whole big discussion right there), but as for why there are so many positive atheist here on WP...not a clue

This is my winning contribution to this thread.

I am also a negative atheist, I guess. I'm an atheist with a spiritual bent. I consider myself a pantheist, and I have a deep appreciation for Eastern religions.

As an atheist, I find myself mostly arguing against atheists on here... most of them usually seem to be doing it wrong.

I'm an atheist, and I don't belittle people for being Christian. That would be a very unpleasant attitude.

im an "atheist" but i have no problem with anyones personal religion,
however if a religion wants to dictate how others beside their religion should live then i get argumentative, i see no reason not to and i dont see it as neither rude nor wrong, it needs to be done.

Quite. I would put in more time on the misguided theists here except that

A. I am not as young and energetic as I was and I stop arguing with the patently not listening

and

B. The patently not listening misguided theists get [besides the diss-bombing everybody has to put up with] quite adequate informed putdowns from the upper echelon atheists who are mostly younger and more vocal than I.

Who are you calling bitter?!

I think the bitterness that some atheists display is understandable since in many societies atheists are shunned as rebels, heathens, evil etc. and are mistreated. Of course it is not true, however many people are taught this way and it is hard for many to dispose this type of ignorance.

As someone who grew up in a devoted Catholic family, I had my hardships when I finally told my parents the truth. Their attitude in the beginning was very childish, however due to my willpower, they eventually accepted that I did not and never believed in their deity.

Today I joke around with them about religion at random and do not mind them making minor jokes about atheists. However, I was extremely bitter beforehand since they treated my lack of any belief as an excuse to not go to church (aka being lazy) and defiance to authority like many other teenagers. It took some time for me to let it go and move on before I let my hostility get the best from me.

I am sure many other atheists who grew up with devoted religious families would have similar stories. Even though I made significant progress years ago, there are still some vocal Christians who cannot accept others for not being religious and use it as an excuse to mistreat them and slander them. I still have issues with such childish behavior and I think no one should tolerate it, from strangers to family members.

I'm a nice atheist. People can think whatever they want! I really don't care! :3 *hugs the religious people* ...yay.

I guess aspies are more atheist because they're a bit more logical but I can't really say that for sure because I haven't asked every single aspie out there what they think.

I'm a bitchy, cantankerousness atheist. I find it incredibly disturbing that a belief in Cloud Fairies is given such high status in Society, that Blasphemy is a crime in my country, that Religion is subverting Science in the US by demanding that it be treated as theory rather than hypothesis.

As soon as people stop mixing their crazy with my country's politics, I couldn't care less what mental debauchery they get up to.

Three things:

1) If your belief system can't stand up to rational scrutiny, that isn't our fault.

2) As ryan93 said, because if nobody fought religion then the future of the enlightened world would be at risk.

3) Because the entire idea of free speech is to have bad ideas scrutinized, criticized, and thrown out.

Nah, just a lonely zipper or two.

I would speculate that people with AS tend to be atheists because they tend to think in very logical and rational terms, which makes it difficult to believe anything that any religion has to say.
