I was really into anarcho-primitivism when I was younger. The an-prims make a lot of good points. It is true that technological progress has led to the destruction of the environment. It is true that prehistoric human societies were the freest societies ever. I agree that technological growth is the primary driver behind social change.
That being said, technological growth is inevitable at this point.
Also, the an-prims are overly cynical about the future of technology. Some types of technology can actually make us freer or save the environment. The printing press made democracy possible, and the internet will likely make more direct forms of democracy possible. I am also confident that human civilisation will survive global warming, thanks to the development of green technology. Once the smoke is clear, nature will gradually recover as it always does.
Most an-prims also don't realize that the rate of human population growth is dropping. At this rate, the global human population will reach its peak around 2100 and then begin to decrease. This will end up being wonderful for the environment.
Once the temporary problems of global warming and overpopulation have been dealt with, there will be just a few thousand humans living in green, democratic cities dotted throughout the world. The wilderness will gradually recover from the horrors of global warming. In this world, there will be plenty of room for people who desire a wild existence.
Even today, there are some hunter-gatherer tribes that are isolated from human civilisation. These tribes may end up being absorbed into civilisation over the next century (which will likely be a time of troubles) … but eventually the system will right itself and then there will be a renaissance of wild people.
In the past, civilized people and wild people peacefully coexisted on the same planet. This will happen again after the human population crosses over the 10 billion hump and then declines. Anarcho-primitivists can ultimately achieve their goals without destroying civilization in its entirety.
I agree that humans need to be more in touch with nature, but destroying civilisation entirely is not a necessary step towards achieving this.
