For me, anime shows the Japanese culture which is fascinating to me.
Also, I find that the Japanese are more willing to explore dark topics. As in, there are more anime TV shows that have a depth not found in Western TV shows, animated or otherwise.
Anime discusses taboos and spirituality. And, like science fiction, it generally allows a more liberal interpretation of reality which lets philosophical commonalities with our corrupt society to seep into our brains in a gentler way.
I don;t like 'stupid' anime like Pokemon, Yu gi Oh and those kiddy ones. The ones I do appreciate are the ones that explore darker and heavier topics. Its easier for ppl to explore those topics because its in a fabricated environment, thus making it ok to show it. For example Samurai Champloo has a lot of elements of morality, Welcome to the NHK has a lot of stuff about Japanese hikkikomori, social pressures and taboos etc. Oh and of course Miyazakis anime are also some of my favorite movies
