John Elder Robinson says that much of his success is due to the difference in his neurological wiring caused by Asperger's. This is not something I hear about very often. What are some advantages to having Asperger's syndrome?

I think we can look at things from a different angle and challenge wide held assumptions easier because our thinking patterns are different. I do the things I am good at completely different from most NTs who are just as good at them. I think many of us automatically look for the road less traveled, and we come up with specific solutions for problems that non-aspies don't think of. We can fit a square into a circle, basically.

Also, I think most aspies are analytical and rational, which I would say are some very good 'symptoms' of Asperger's.

One major advantage which can be an indirect effect of any condition. Is that you spend a lot more time doing introspection. I have learned a lot about how my brain and body works because of al the problems i had pushing me to seek answers. I think this is very advantageous since most of the people my age really dont seem to care about this sort of thing. Also not being a part of the group mentality makes me not care as much what others think about my decisions and thus they dont influence me as much. I see depression as a learning experience i came out of it so much better all the insights that came from it is something that the average person doesnt experience.

PRO: I think you can reach higher levels of serotonin, which is really cool if your doing drugs that icrease your serotonin levels like LSD & Mushrooms.
CON: but you also often have burnt out adrenals which makes it more difficult to express yourself.

Knowledge will set you free,

Learn how to go with the flow.

Learn how to let go - this knowledge is especially useful for sensitive people.

Everyone with aspergers is a unique human being. you shouldn't lose your identity within the label of "aspergers".

your on an important mission on earth to learn and grow - All humans are spiritual beings.

That I'm my own person and I'm not influenced by the current trends of today's younger people. :)

Or, as a T-shirt I once saw put it, "'Think outside the box'? Where is this 'box' you speak of? And are there cookies in it?"

1) Awesomeness
2) Ability to cut the crap
3) Being non-conformist
4) Immense knowledge of interesting things
5) We don't waste our time socialising.
6) We don't waste our time doing stupid things
7) Our sensory abilities allow us to tolerate large amounts of bad sensory input
8) Or alternatively, they allow us to experience copious amounts of good sensory input
9) Awesomeness

When you offend other people, you can legitimately say "Sorry, that's my aspergers.".

The lack of empathy can be an advantage in some situations.

There is one major advantage I can see from having Asperger's. The unique laser like focus Aspies have on the topic that interests us. Dr. Michael Burry for example cites the fact he read mortgage contracts that were hundreds of pages long to determine which were most likely to fail. The information was publicly available, but only Dr. Burry and the lawyers drafting the contracts actually read them. He was able to use this information to make a tremendous amount of money from the meltdown. It's that ability to focus on one thing to the exclusion of everything else that makes Aspies unique among society.

There are no advantages. Nothing good comes out of my AS. The only advantage I can find is the fact that I'm good at hiding it, and I can read facial expression, body language, and tone of voice - without having to specifically learn it. But that's just part of my personality - not really a symptom causing advantage. That is just a symptom I don't have, and am glad.

How can there be no advantages to your AS? I mean, there has to be some sort of something that's a plus.

I think a few advantages are: Things are usually funnier to us, we can think in more creative ways.... Lots of things are an advantage. :D

I've always appreciated being able to learn something insanely quickly when it becomes a special interest, can be useful. There's also extreme attention to detail, although I think this can go both ways, sometimes it's better to complete something fairly well rather than taking ages to get perfect results.

I don't like the way I go out looking and acting normal, yet I still get looked at as though I'm doing something completely different, weird, or freaky, like running around babbling, ''look at me I'm a crazy ret*d!''

It's like strangers know me, and I f*****g HATE IT!! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !!

Fair enough point. I often get weird looks from people despite not being all that weird looking. Maybe my height, but yeah, I get what you're saying.

More advantages:
You get good at catching things as they fall after you knocked them over.
You can stare at a wall for entertainment by looking for shapes and such. (at least I can.)

Nope - I don't do those.
I don't look for details, only when I have to.
