Spending time around young kids at a family get-together yesterday made me start reflecting on how it had felt to be their age and how differently I viewed the world back then.

Looking back, I also started thinking about how some of the messages I was sent from adults during my childhood were really off-base. In hindsight, some of it was sad and a bit damaging, but some of it was also pretty funny.

What about you guys? Anything the grown-ups told you as a little kid that you now realize was completely wrong? Please share!

Oh my yes, so many things.
Sadly for me, I was told that Adults are always correct, and I believed them.
Growing up I didn't start to question things until I was about 14 - 16.
But I still believed a lot of adults then, and I still do now.

But no as much as I use to.

I agree with Egyptian. I still sometimes finding myself giving other adults a special wisdom and judicial power over my life, when they often don't know any better than myself.

The thing I get from a lot of people are they are essentially pathological liars about everything, but it isn't called that because they do so in the name of social niceties and good manners. It can be hard to pin down what someone actually feels towards something because they are taught to be so evasive with the truth.

I realize I see the world from an uncommon perspective and I think that is the source of a lot of my difficulties in relating with people.

Did you guys get the 'send your dinner to starvin people in China' if you didn't finish eating it. I never did understand that. Obviously, I didn't want to eat it so why would I care, and there are a billion plus Chinese so how the world can they be starving if they keep making more of themselves. That is my thing. I reason things out in my own little weird way, while most seem to react in a 'how they feel about it' way.

My mom once told me all my stuffed animals came to life while I slept. I was terrified to sleep for a while after that...

She denied ever saying it years later. :?

It wasn't my parents that told me lies. It was one of my older brothers. Fortunately I was not gullible (sp?), so I didn't believe him, or if I did it wasn't for very long.

One time he told me that the Devil liked to kidnap little kids who wore red on Tuesdays. This was on a Tuesday when I was about 7 and was wearing several red clothing items.

He also told me that fathers gave birth to boys and mothers gave birth to girls.

I was told that babies started out as seeds and the seed grew inside the mother's tummy.

I dont think I was ever lied to... My mom always told me the truth about everything... even how babies were made when I was only 4... I did most of my learning from books so I think I did not grow up believing all the stories they tell kids... I only wish I never read so many fairytales as a kid...
