Hey well well well
Look i just wanted to say that the fact that the American fan of anime will say things like teen titians is anime
my.. god.. guess what it isn't
now i don't blame you to the extent that i blame the fact that fact that well on second thought .. i guess it's crossover take the examaple i just used teen titians is bye warner bros right? well they had a really good show when i was about 8 or 9 it started runinng and ran for while it was Batman the animated seris in a word :Great i loved it
very noir and good plots
then the next batman related thing they do batman beyond is somewhat in retrospect anime influced
but now all the new ones out on tv are just like anime very influced
just wondering if any of you guys can think of reason for these changes
just as a word of advice though don't get offened when i make this point
i think that anime has to made in japan and that imho all the best animation and form of art or entertianment should focus on the plot

I've only seen a little of REAL Japanese anime, so i cant really say this, but the real thing is way better.

*nod nods* I was delving back through the threads and found this post and I must say I STRONGLY agree with you. I've seen so many people who are like "OMG Teen Titans and Totally Spies is anime"! And it is most certainly not. It has been influenced by anime and the fact that anime is becoming a popular market. The truth is though unless I'm starved for anime I won't even watch the real anime they show on tv because it's horribly butchered. I usually choose to buy the series on dvd in their unedited format that way they haven't been censored by prudish tv censors.

*sigh*
Luckily, I don't watch TV that often. It's amazingly easy to slowly give it up when you find out there's never anything good on. I do watch Saturday morning cartoons with my brother. WB and FOX...I can't find a show that isn't trying to be Anime. I don't like Anime and I would read Manga if it was rearranged in the Western style, it's enjoyable.

Yeah.. O_o Tv really these days is starting to suck. I hardly ever watch it. I don't see what's not to like about anime though? Is it a particular quality you don't like? Like the magical girl cliche', or there being bunches of anime with mechas? *crumples* Western style art kinda freaks me out.. However if you like more western-y looking manga you might like Big O. That's the only slightly more western style anime/manga I can think of. It has a very batman feel to it.

There used to be a small series on liquid television called The Maxx which I would call an American Anime. It was short, had an ending, and a point. It was weird, and layered, kind of like Lain but with an arguably less serious plot.

I would agree with what's been said, that anime is becoming a lot more popular over here now, so the animators in the US are following the trend and allowing it to influence them more.

I also agree that animation series from Japan are in general a lot better than US cartoons. Of course, you also have to consider that Japan makes a lot more cartoons, too, and not all of them are that great, either. There are some really amazing ones, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Lain, Cowboy Bebop, and Haibane Renmei, to name a few, but there are also some really stupid ones, particularly those made for younger audiences. Cartoons in the US are generally aimed at younger kids, and you also have to take that into consideration.

I just don't like the style anime uses. I think it's the coloring technique that bothers me(or the plot) . I don't like manga because it's black & white, and I couldn't read one correctly if my life depended on it.

I think Anime is a bit too cliched...

It's a common thing... someone will invent a unique style and everyone will copy it until the style is meaningless...

Cartoons are cartoons the world over. Teen Titans IS Japanese-influenced and uses the 'anime' style, even though it is not made in Japan. Anime is simply short for "dessin anime", which is French for cartoon. Manga literally means 'comic strip' in Japanese.
It's like Spanish reggae. Reggae isn't native to Latin America, but the Latins adopted the style and perfected it. Granted, I haven't seen many Japanese cartoons aside from Pokemon, but Totally Spies and Teen Titans seem exactly the same as Japan-produced shows.

There don't seem to be much in the way of decent cartoons anymore. When I was a kid we had the cream of the crop- He-Man, Transformers, Thundercats, The REAL Ghostbusters, Silverhawks, MASK, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, Captain N, Jem and the Holograms.. (er forget that last one, heh... >_>) etc etc

Nowadays all the cartoons seem to be about kids standing around in the playground discussing social issues. "OMG did you see the new kid?" etc.
And they all have the same recycled plot formulas... never anything creative or different.

And whenever there is anything clever and creative, it always gets cancelled after one season... Like The Ripping Friends- for all its cheap slapstick, it had some very clever and subtle jokes. The sort of show that looks puerile at first, and it takes watching a few episodes until you actually "get it".

IT'S RIPPING TIME!

I remember all those but the last two. Amazing shows. Their's still some good cartoons today, but nothing can beat Tom & Jerry or Looney Tunes. Anime can't even begin to compare to something that can entertain you w/o dialogue IMO.

If you want to see some truly epic story arcs in anime, here are a couple of titles that you have got to check out

Neon Genesis Evangelion
FullMetal Alchemist
Melody of Oblivion (only available on DVD in the USA and still, not all episodes have been released on DVD yet)
Sonic the Hedgehog (DiC Animation's saturday morning cartoon from 1993-1994, known among Sonic Fans as SatAM)

The third one is not made by a Japanese production company but I think it qualifies as an anime. Unfortunately, it was cancelled and the last episode broadcast on the air (episode 26) ended on a MASSIVE cliff-hanger.

A recent American-made film short that could count as an anime.

Kaze: Ghost Warrior

This one is amazing. It was made by one man who sequestered himself in Alaska, just a few miles south of the arctic circle, for 6 months, and made the whole film in those 6 months, by himself, entirely on consumer grade equipment, no professional grade gear at all. The full budget for the film, $5000 and it's won numerous awards.

And if you want to see a hilarious anime that is at least as entertaining as Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera, watch Excel Saga. Each episode mocks a different genre of anime except for one episode that parodies American cartoons. Excel Saga is what anime would be like if Mel Brooks directed it.

A cool Anime-styled American show is The Boondocks
