I really hate the term "Aspie". It just seems to me to associate a sense of identity with having AS. As if you ARE AS instead of a person WITH AS. AS is not all you are! Who agrees with me?

Labels are for cans, not people ~ Anthony Rapp

Well, I don't think autism is all who I am, but I still do not mind calling myself autistic (as opposed to "a person with autism"). Similarly, I also call myself Canadian rather than "a person from Canada", brunette rather "a person with brown hair", female rather than "a person with female body parts", and so on. I don't see the word autistic (or autie...and aspie when I once thought I had aspergers) to be the sole definition of who I am, just one label of the many I happen to use when describing myself.

I hate both "Aspie" and "Asperger's." I say "AS" or "people with AS" instead.

I say I'm autistic only, I dislike "aspie" since it sounds like a clubhouse name.

Just call me a Kinks Fan. That's the most dominant part of my personality. Don't call me an aspie. It sounds too much like ass pee. Nobody wants to be called ass pee.

Personaly, I find it very offending if a non autistic person calls me "aspie". Technicaly I'm HFA because I didn't speak until I was four. I hate the term "aspie" as well. It just sounds stupid and condisending. There was a thread recently about words that physically cause you pain and for me "aspie" is one of those words.

The dergatory term, "ass pie" used by bullies dosen't bother me half as much as "aspie" does. Perhaps because I know it's meant to be offensive and if anyone ever called me that to my face, I'd be giving them a knuckle sandwhich in return.

I don't often find abbreviated words cute cause they usually just annoy me by their cutting off of crucial etymological information but I find this one cute and yeah kind of clubhousey but that's what I like about it. Rather this than thinking about Hans Asperger in all his Hans Aspergerness every time I think of the neurological type.

I do have mixed feelings on identifying myself primarily as that, though.

I have taken this literally, then pictorially. The visual is not good. I think I will always use "autistic" from now on.

I wonder what Dr. Hans would think about "Aspie".

I am about them only here who likes it.

I hate it when people say "I'm Asperger's" though. "I HAVE Asperger's" is fine, but "I'm Asperger's" just drives me crazy. It's not an adjective. I also don't like "I'm OCD", "I'm ADHD" etc. Saying "I am OCD" is like saying "I'm obsessive compulsive disorder", you can't BE a disorder.

"Aspie" isn't all that bad as a label. But I think I know what you mean, why should we have a label? Or why bother to define ourselves in that way? It would be great if everyone just thought of each other as different and accepted it, but if people know I am an aspie I suspect they will think better of me in most cases, rather that just think I am "ignorant" or "stupid" or "rude" or "not a nice person".

The label describes me accurately in a way that is not derogatory. I have no reason to hate the term.

Well most NTs don't know what "Aspie" means anyway so why not just say I have AS, it's a form of autism, etc...So to think that people will think better of you if you call yourself an "Aspie" is a fallacy

How does "Aspie" accurately describe anyone? It's just a pet name for Asperger's

I actually kind of like it, for reason I know not.
