Ever try to cut or trim your own hair, rather than go to a barber's or hairdresser's?

I'll be needing a haircut soon, in fact I suppose it'll be this week. I have this temptation to try to cut my hair myself but I have to resist. I tried to do it when I was a poor student and would rather not spare the money to have a proper haircut at a barber's.

I have to resist especially as when I attempted my own haircuts, they came out a mess and weren't very even, as pointed out when I did eventually pay for a haircut at a barber's. Interestingly, I was even refused a student discount because my apparent level of dysfunction was high enough they couldn't believe I could possibly be a student.

I have long hair so when it gets annoying too long I just hack a bit off.

I used to cut my hair by standing between two mirrors in a narrow hallway. I suppose I did an adequate job, but people had low expectations of me to begin with. Eventually I got tired of the effort and stopped cutting my hair altogether, just wearing it pulled back. Every once in a while, someone who hasn't looked in a mirror recently hurls the epithet "Hippie!" at me, but that's not a motivator to change. It's a lot less painful than having to make conversation with a barber, if there are such people anymore.

I've cut my own hair on more than one occasion. I'm a tight-wad. Anything to save a buck...

I detest going to the hairdressers. The one who didn't know if Canada was north or south of Mexico freaked me out a little, yet they often have a knack of making the intelligent seem much less intelligent than them. So, yes, I've cut my own hair on numerous occasions. It's really curly and I've never met one who actually knows what they're doing with curls (although they all swear that they've had lots of experience with them). I've had more compliments after cutting my own hair than I ever did after going to a hairdressers. I also cut my husband's hair (easy with clippers) and my dad's (who has curls like me and I do with scissors and a comb).

I've been cutting my own hair since I was a kid--not to save money but to avoid the unpleasantness of the experience.

I got sick of barbers/stylists telling me off for "squirming"--which was their interpretation of what are actually uncontrollable whole-body-spasms that happen when someone touches me lightly. (I also got sick of the experience itself--it was sensory hell).

My DIY haircuts usually turn out quite well--maybe because I use hair clippers for all but blending and keep my hair short....and at this point I've had a lot of practice.

Get a set of clippers, and whack it short every so often, that's what I do.

Attempts to cut mine with scissors have always led to hilariously horrible haircuts

No. I wont even shave my facial hair. I'm scared I'll somehow go off track and shave my head hair.

i usually cut and dye my own hair. i am cheap and lazy (it seems like less work to do it myself than to go to a salon).

Sometimes I'll shave my head if that counts.

I've been cutting my hair for years. I finally got sick of having someone else cut it, so I bought a $20 pair of clippers and started doing it myself. It's easy since I cut it the same length all over, but it's so time consuming that I hate doing it. I procrastinate so badly that I only cut it about once a year. When it gets long I just start combing it back. You'd be surprised how short you can make long hair look with a little mousse.

I cut my own bangs once, and it looked awful. I like having my hair fairly short, so I don't mind going to the barber.

I did that once and promised myself never to do it again. It did look awful.

I might do something dramatic and shave my head, but I don't think cutting my own hair would come out well at all. I had a girlfriend with long hair and she insisted I trim her hair only the one time. I see myself as an Edward Scissorhands without the artistic talent.
