So I am in a Radiology Tech program and I just started my clinicals. I have only been in clinicals for two weeks (4 days to be precise Tues Thurs only). Last thursday, my clinical instructor sat down with me and told me that several other techs had told her that I was being rude and/or offensive to them. This came to a shock to me. I did not think that I had been doing this. She also told me that I had been argumentative with a specific tech. This one I knew about, because I wasn't arguing, I was trying to let him know a rule about my program that is very important. I was actually glad that my CI had pulled me aside and told me; otherwise I wouldn't have known. I can be more aware now. She told me that I wasn't in trouble, but that she just wanted to express her concerns with me. Now I have been told that because of this incident, I am being written up, which, if it happens again, may cause me to be kicked out of the hospital I was placed at. This worries me a lot. Its not like I am trying to be rude. I am around new people and am just trying to fit in. I am going to be more conscious of my actions and words from now, but does anyone else have advise? Or has this happened to anyone else?

Happens to me all the time.

Are you officially diagnosed? If so, you can explain that to the hospital and they may understand better. Otherwise, GET DIAGNOSED.

I am diagnosed, but I don't like to be public about it unless I have to. I don't want people to treat me differently. I explained to be CI and my professor about it, but they seemed more focused on if i would happen again and how I would be disciplined if it did :(

Yup! This happens to me too! I have a habit of telling the truth regardless of the consequences, or as the ump once said, "I calls 'em, like I sees 'em." This usually doesn't go over well with most other people though, so I have had to learn to keep my mouth shut. Well, I usually do.

If it would happen again ? I guess the clinical instructor does not understand what not reading very well non verbal clues means do they ? The clinical instructor needs to learn more about AS. Disciplined for what ? You being you ? If you did do it on purpose sure but the ci sounds clueless.

I been told that too that I call it like I see it.
Like yesterday at the fair...some lady had baby koi, but they were so young it was hard to tell them from goldfish.
So I asked her if they were Koi or just regular fish. My sister got embarrased for some reason by my question.

Well you need to find out exactly what they are percieving as rude so you can work on that. I also suggest that you hire a disability advocate who could help you negotate with your employers about what is to be expected with your AS.
Maybe you just need a t-shirt that says, " no frills conversationalist"

You can always give an apology that is common in our family which is..."I am sorry that you feel that I was being rude." Technically this is not an apology but places the blame on the person who percieves that they were wronged.

I am not helping matters, am I ??

anyway...need to get that disability advocate.

It's difficult to determine how you were rude as this can be a very situation dependent issue. Since this is an issue, you might consider divulging your social difficulties with those you work with an inform them that you don't ever intend to come across as rude. People with AS and similar issues frequently are misinterpreted as being argumentative, myself included. I've noticed every time I've been accused of being argumentative, it was over a matter of confusion between what I understood and what the other individual understood, and I attempted to address this issue by reiterating my facts rather than presenting the conflicting information as a question to the other individual.

Anyway, I would speak with your CI about how to approach others on the issue first. They will probably be willing to help you as long as you approach them in a manner that conveys you are sincerely trying to acquire better interpersonal skills.

I am sorry. I wish I had a suggestion for you. I don't necessarily agree that telling others about your issues really helps at all. In OUR minds you would think it helps, but although I have not done it professionally, I have done it with a couple of neighbors who have said I was "odd, had a pissed off face, etc..." and at the end, I accomplished nothing. They just stopped talking to me all together...so, I'm not sure that in a job situation that would be any better...heck, it could be worse...
