From what I've seen on this site in three years, it seems aspies and auties are articulate, great spellers, and can basically write like one would speak. When they relate a story, I can almost hear the voice of the person they're quoting. They use punctuation so effectively, it's like I can hear the voice inflections in head. It's straight forward, yet also manages to be conversational.

If you want to know what I mean, look at other internet message boards. Take Yahoo! answers for instance. People often write like:

Okay look you need to tell her how you feel, it would be unfare to hold it agains her if u didn't even make the effort. Okay well that is all havve to say, if she starts trippin, whatevva, you just be the person you want to be and don't worry LOL! Hope that helps.

That's just something I made up, but you get what I mean. I'm just saying, I like how people communicate here. I rarely see the kind of babble I just demonstrated above.

i think it's more like the others that just don't give a crap about proper punctuation.
it's not like i type perfectly, i make a lot of mistakes, but they are usually just minor.
also, i'm usually too lazy to capitalize my words if i'm not writing a graded paper.

on the other hand, for some reason kids these days Often type Like This I Dont See How Thats Easy Or Fast...

I think we're often pretty good at grammar, spelling, syntax and all that. I know a lady with some strong Aspie traits whose text messages are almost perfect unless she's upset, when a few minor errors slip through the net.

I guess it's because we tend to be perfectionists and we love clarity......I always try to make my stuff clear because I know how it feels to me when somebody presents me with semi-literate junk to decypher - I feel like throwing it back at them and refusing to read it until they've made it clear. I actually get angry instead of just deciding I don't know what they're on about and discarding it. I don't know why. I've mellowed over the years but it's still a strain to have to make sense of gobbledegook.

I think another similar Aspie hallmark is the extensiveness of what we write and say. Most people will say a thing briefly and leave the listener to deduce the reason and relevence of their comment. An Aspie will more often elaborate, explaining and expanding as a first resort rather than leaving it to the listener to ask about the bits they don't follow. Dad used to spend ages explaining things to me, giving example after example but never stopping to find out whether I'd got his point yet. I guess we just aren't fluent with the idea of 2-way conversation, so our literary style is based on the assumption that we have one shot at getting our message across, and so we end up with a book instead of a tweet. On the other hand I've seen Aspies post some very brief and skeletal comments on WP. Usually I can only do that if I really focus on brevity, reminding myself that most of what I put is overkill.

But although I can be brief, I seem to get something important out of writing at length. So does my texting friend - that's obvious from the sheer volume of what she sends. Aspies often love words, I think.

I completely agree with you. I have noticed this. Is it maybe that we make up for this sort of communication while we don't always pick up on human to human interaction?

You know, personally, I can't stand text speak. LOLIDKOMGBBQ is as far as I get. I tend to punctuate and fully spell out my texts.

I actually really enjoy writing as well. That's my hobby and obsession. So, I do get a lot of practice because that means I would have to edit my work less later on. And editing is a horribly long painful process without grammar and spelling mistakes.

I think people would get easily frustrated here when they keep having to explain and reexplain themselves.

I'm quite pedantic, when I type a letter, document or post. If you ever spot a spelling mistake in one of my posts, it's most likely due to a typo, which I've missed, when proof-reading. If there are any words in the wrong place, it's because it has been edited and I haven't spotted it. After posting, I will edit the post, if I spot an error. Like you, ToughDiamond, it's due to perfectionism and wanting to make myself clear. Can you imagine the shame, if I find someone has already quoted my imperfect post?

I tend to write quite a lot too. Some people might see this as over-explaining a point. But, I'm not repeating myself; I see every point as a separate piece of info, which I think is relevant to the topic.

I'm terrible at typing. I make lots of mistakes. But I read, edit, reread and edit my posts.I put a lot of effort into choosing the right words, punctuation and grammar.

I think so. Neurotypicals don't usually have to make everything clear on the first pass, unless they're publishing a book. They are content to just take a vague stab at saying what they mean, because they expect the listener to ask the right questions to clear any blocks....i.e. conversation. We have trouble with that, so we put everything into our first shot.

I even hate it when I've managed to edit it out, and then it says "edited by ToughDiamond...." so everybody knows I've fudged it.

 Horror of horrors - I've just edited mine. I changed 'is' to 'as' in the last sentence.

Aspies are good typers simply because we're perfectionists and like things to be correct. The reason I type well is because I can't stand the way a sentence looks if bad spelling and grammar is being used.

If you edit early enough after posting, you don't get branded for it. It might be necessary to edit from the same window that you used for making the post, in which case don't close it. Whether or not this is actually the case, and exactly how long we get, I wish I knew.
