English Riding Show in a Cowboy Town

One of my daughters called me this morning to tell me she was having a horse show today. They live a mile away and I hardly ever see them. Horses could become extinct and it wouldn't bother me. But I went. You do that sort of thing.

They were dressed like british aristocrats, riding around in a circle. The people watching wore cowboy hats. I stood around a little while and left. Ain't no point in white boy crying in cowboy country.

In the Swedish province Småland there is a place called High Chaparall, a copy of a western town. There you can see "gun duelling", "bank robberies", etc like in the good old West. It's the only place where I ever have heard a Colt .45 revolver fired, with loose cartridges though. Very few people in Sweden even have the right to own a one hand .45 gun. The bang was tremendous, like my grandfathers shotgun.

Americans often get accused of being ignorant about other cultures, but we have a major university based on the swedish prison system. It's called "Yale."

There are cowboys in Liverpool.

I'd like to live in a place were it is accepted to wear guns openly and without a f*****g license. But you can't do that in Texas anymore, can you? It's a shame, as we consider Texas being the gun state here in Europe. But Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Arizona would be OK, wouldn't they?

You can probably get out of Yale as easily as from a Swedish prison. Or something like that.

By the way, it isn't illegal to escape from a Swedish prison. It's illegal to hurt someone by the escape but the escape itself isn't a crime...

I go to Yale.

I know that CanyonWind's comment is meant as a joke, but I didn't understand it... is it supposed to be a reference to the fact that Bush went to school here?

Bush didn't complete his studies, did he? Just like many Swedish prisoners don't do their time.

Hmm, I thought he managed to graduate, but his grades were terrible... if I remember correctly!

But for the most part, most Yalies would rather forget that he went here. We ... sort of keep quiet about it.

Then again, I'm a graduate student here, whereas Bush went here as an undergrad. Totally different situation altogether.

From what I've heard Bush Sr bribed the Yale board so that his idiot son could get his grade.

For that matter, I'm not a graduate but have more "points" at the university than most Swedish politicians, and now I'm talking about the really powerful ones.

Wow, I bet bribing wouldn't have been necessary!

I currently am a teaching assistant for a class (not saying which, hehe) and am directly responsible for the grades of the undergraduate students in my class. Interacting with them, I can tell you that Yale undergraduates are no different from any other undergrads... meaning that there are really bright students, and there are other students that just make you want to go, "how the hell did you get accepted here?" And with the grading scheme for this particular class, it's almost impossible to get a grade lower than a B-. Failing out of school requires an average of lower than a C.

Some people like to make a big deal out of the Ivy League schools, but to me it's just like everywhere else.
