Special Interests
A special Interest is some sort of interest that really grabs people, like a passion. For Aspergians it is basically their whole focus. I would like to hear about the Special Interests of WP. I'll start with mine. I like to cook and drum. Those are the main things at the moment however if given the chance and the motivation I would like to start writing poetry again. This time, I want to try writing it in Tamil, a main language in South India that my dad and his family speak, and which am learning how to speak, from which all Dravidian or South Indian Languages developed.

I have a few special interests. The Kinks are my #1 special interest. I started to notice their music when I was 8 when Come Dancing was on the charts. I've been liking them ever since than.
Another special interest that I have is the Internet. It all started 15 years ago in December. A family relative got us hooked up to the Internet and I was going on there every single day since than. I looked up all the movies that were popular in 1997 and 1998 at the time. That was long before the support site of WP was in existence. Nowadays, I go on WP when I'm not busy with other things and my real life and WP life are intertwined so that members of my WP family can see me as I honestly am. I've joined in 2004 and I've let my true self be known to WP since the Mid September of 2009.
The Sixties are another one of those interests. It's a tricky one for me to describe, if people can't see me face to face. There is a certain era within that decade that I like. No, I'm not a hippie. I'm a Mod. In England in the 60s, there were Mods and Rockers. Mods were fans of The Kinks, The Who and The Small Faces and they dressed and looked like those band members and they rode on street scooters. Rockers preferred Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry and they wore leather jackets, slicked their hair back and rode on motorcycles. They were always clashing with each other and especially on the beaches in Brighton. That's the part of the 60s that I like.
The Olympics are pretty self explanatory. I've started watching The Summer Olympics in the Summer of 1984 and I've been watching the summer and winter games ever since that summer.
My Nintendo Wii is another one of my favourite things. I enjoy playing any workout or sports game on my Wii and Balance Board. That's the main part of the reason that you guys don't see me on WP for as many hours of the day, these days. I'm either doing the Wii Fit+ or some other game like it.

SpongeBob SquarePants has been my main special interest since 2005. I know it's kind of a weird special interest, but it started when I watched it on Nickelodeon. Slowly I became addicted to the show and started to collect its merchandise, eventually leading to a collection of more than 100 SpongeBob items. The humour of the show really appealed to me, and it's always been something to make me happy whenever I'm stressed or upset about something, like if I had a bad day, I could watch it for 10 minutes to cool myself down. I guess it's because I've always loved cartoons. I've even attempted to become the No. 1 fan on a competition (to no avail), but on some SpongeBob forums I'm known as being one of the biggest fans there.
The Simpsons has always been a close 2nd favourite as long as I can remember, and no matter what main obsession I had, I always loved The Simpsons. I've been watching it since I was a child, and while I admit the new episodes they make today aren't as clever as the older ones, I still find them entertaining. Like SpongeBob, I have also got a bit of a Simpsons collection, albeit only half as big.

What I like about cooking, is that it is very cognitive and logical but gives you room to play with it. I am a novice at cooking, having cooked only two major dishes(a stir fry and beef stroganoff), but I really like to become a snob about cooking, using fresh garlic heads and jasmine rice as opposed to minute rice and minced garlic. I like to read through big fancy cookbooks devoted to one specific area of cooking, and then absorb the information. For instance, I checked out a book called Tartine Bread, all about the mission of this specific bakery that attempted to recreate the authentic feel of obscure french country baking in the unique style of the baker who founded Tartine. It had all kinds of authenticity. Also I had one about african cooking, with the ingredients and styles of all african cuisines. For poetry, I really like langston hughes, and the beats. Not kerouac, usually, but ginsberg is fine. However the real stuff is in the works of people like Lew Welch, Diane DiPrima and Amiri Baraka. Joanne Kyger is dry, but she writes about being in India all the time. It's interesting to see what my heritage country looks like to other people from america. I also like Tamil songs and Tamil Cinema. I have a lot of favorite songs, but I am not as familiar with the composers although I know some of their names. Gv. Prakash, Ilayaraja, A.R Rahman are all good, but I like James Vasanthan the best. Anbaale Azhagana Veedu is an amazing song. Also, Karthik, who used to be a singer, has now made his debut in music production with the movie Aravaan. I am really enjoying that music. The older music is best. The movies they come from are cheesy but the songs are often not. In fact the Kuthu songs that come out are 100000% cheesier and poorer in quality than the older songs. Anyways...A lot of these things are things that I stopped paying attention to or have just paid attention to. I've relapsed. Wow, you must be a big spongebob fan...
When I was a child my special interests were reading, Shirley Temple movies, child development and Little House on the Prairie. I was also obsessed with people dying for awhile, don't ask. Right now I'd have to say my special interests are reading, psychology, child development, Degrassi TNG box sets, The Sims, Internet and techno music.
Between the ages of 4-7 I was obsessed with the concept of people dying. It just fascinated me just learning about life and death. I'd always ask my mum if so and so was going to die if they were sick or whatever.
I've always been obsessed with reading my whole life. When I was a child I did this weird thing by reading out loud at home. I read out loud until I was abut 9 years old.
Reading and watching tv also causes me to stim. For some weird reason I always have to wiggle my fingers when I am. I don't do it in front of people anymore but I still do it when I'm alone sometimes.
From the ages of 8-12 I was obsessed with Shirley Temple movies. I had the whole collection.
I was obsessed with the Spice Girls as a young girl but a lot of girls were. As a teenager I loved Degrassi: TNG and I have all of the box sets. i still watch them over again.
I've always been obsessed with child development from an early age. My mum's a nurse and when I was little I used to read her nursing books. I was obsessed with the whole concept of how babies were made, how they developed and giving birth. I went on to college to study Early Childhood Development. I love learning about psychology as well.
When I was a child I loved Little House on the Prairie. I read the books until they fell apart, I watched the series over and over again, I read the biographies, I knew what was real on the show and what wasn't, I knew everything about Laura Ingalls Wilder. I could tell you all the places where she lived and I read about her daughter as well.
I'm totally obsessed with playing The Sims and making up different families. I go through spurts where I'll play that game all weekend, all day and all night. I can get caught up with the Internet as well.
I love techno music and I have since I was 11 years old. My favourite artist right now is Deadmau5, I'm totally obsessed.
Bosses and iteration and Zelda and ponies and Aspergers.

My biggest special interest sofar, is also my current >_>
I have been playing guitar since I was 13, off and on, but mostly off. I recently, about a year ago though, was motivated to start playing again, and it's become quite an actual special interest. I had always liked guitar, but now I can't get enough of it, and get fairly upset that I can't play for more than 5 hours a day because of soreness, and have to skip some days entirely if I've played too much the previous day
Although, my interest isn't only of playing guitar, when I can't play, I read about guitar gear, and occasionally techniques. I probably know too much about my favorite types of guitars, amps, effects pedals, and accessories ![]()

How do you feel about the Scooter Skins that came along later?

My main special interest would be music.
I used to be into books before I got into music though.
A more recent special interest of mine would be Thomas Newman. You know, how people say special interests blow everything out of proportion. It'd be like that with Thomas Newman for me. ^^
I have started an ambitious project, namely watch every film he has scored. I have only seen eight so far. ^^ A special interest related to Thomas Newman would be The Innocents, the new wave band he used to play the keyboards for in the early 80s.
Mods are the only way to be. I should get some Mod friends.
I decided a while back that if I ever got a driver's license, it would be for a scooter. ^^ Scooters are superior to big motorcycles, in my opinion. Oasis had a photo session on scooters and I know that Noel Gallagher had one at one point.
Because I am obsessed with music, I have changing musical interests. At the moment it is Thomas Newman, but last year it was mainly Tears For Fears.
Another special interest of mine, and a very new one, would be films. I developed this interest around 2009. Before that I enjoyed films as part of popular culture. Now it is about watching good films and enjoying them and learning more about films and directors. I am very eager to watch more and more films and I already have a schedule for this year. I may not seem very obsessed about films if you compare me to other people who are total film nerds, but I haven't been as obsessed a couple of years ago. Also, I am very critical. I am not too easy on many established directors.
I have minor interests in politics (Well, not really, it is more about political concepts than contemporary issues...), art and... I read random things on subjects like... astronomy and football.

Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movies - This special interest started in January of 2010, when I decided to watch Edward Scissorhands on a whim. From there, I watched all of the movies that Burton and Depp had done together, and an obsession was born. My absolute favorites are (in no particular order): Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and of course Edward Scissorhands. I saw Alice in Wonderland in theaters on opening day (March 5th, 2010) and I plan on doing the same for Burton and Depp's latest movie, Dark Shadows, which comes out on May 11th this year.
This obsession is pretty narrow since I don't really care for Burton's popular stop-motion animated movies, or the ones where Johnny Depp isn't the leading man. I also don't really like the Johnny Depp movies that weren't directed by Tim Burton. While Burton and Depp are talented enough on their own, in my opinion they are at their absolute best when they work together. There's just something about watching Johnny Depp playing a sickly-looking, eccentric loner in a Tim Burton movie that is very magical and never gets old for me.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - This special interest started in November of 2011. There was a sudden explosion of My Little Pony popularity here on WP during that time, and I decided to watch a couple of episodes to see what all the fuss was about. I quickly became obsessed with it. Now I have seen every episode that has aired so far and I own a modest amount of merchandise. I love the art style of the show; it looks very cute, colorful and expressive, not unlike anime (which I used to be majorly obsessed with).
Well,
I taught myself electronics building Amateur Radios and communicate via Morse code. I guess in some respects I am similar to John Elder Robison who wrote "Look Me In The Eye" as he did similar things in electronics.
Books are a passion of mine but I hate Fiction. So did Kim Peek who the movie Rain Man was made after. I usually read biographies and Philosophy. Or something around the subject of Classical Music.
I can have other interests but really only a few at a time. And then I am extremely passionate about them. Some other interests have been ....
Artistic Roller Skating
Classical Guitar
Bicycles (Trek or Brompton)
For me, social engineering. NT's are largely idiots and they're easy to elicit, manipulate and interrogate. So I made it my hobby. I have BasKet(brilliant program) files on almost everyone I know or encounter, habits, emotional statuses, occupations, views. Anything that can be used to increase understanding of what makes them work, this is an excellent interest for me I think, due to the social ineptitude and all turns out we also make surprisingly adept liars. Alex, Jamie, if you've figured out that I use this site and found me, yes, I do this. I am sorry.
On a less malicious note, I also have a deeprooted interest in geology. Specifically crystals. This is as simple as the fact that crystals are perfect, ordered and regular by nature and naturally appealed to 6 year old me. That was my obsession for the past 8 years or so until I replaced it with the aforementioned social engineering fixation. So yeah. If any fellow social engineering nerds are reading, this would be a great premise for pretexting. I wish you the best of luck in attempting to elicit my bank account details etc.
