Argh...I've had serious issues finding work where I am. It's a pretty liberal area, but I find that I'm having trouble applying for jobs that I won't have to worry about my qualifications for. The thing is, aside from being transgender, I am also aspie, and the two things I think are giving me issues when I go and drop off resumes and speak to managers. I am a female-to-male transgender person (pre-hormones), so I prefer a male presentation and use a male name. However, I don't always pass very well. I usually show up dressed androgynously so that the person can decide how to interpret me, and if they get it wrong, I can always correct them later. I have been applying to retail jobs, but I have not received any calls back from any prospective employers. I wonder if it's because I don't come across as perky or feminine if I am not being read as male. I also worry that my vocabulary and manner of speech might make me come across as 'too intelligent' or 'too pedantic' or 'not exactly the retail type'. *sigh*

Have you attempted to find work in a Call Center?

Eww, I think a call centre job would be just the pits! Perhaps a modern music shop or more avant garde clothes shop would have possibilities. A local pet shop here had a male to female transgender person working for them until they closed down (not because of the assistant, I might add).

I know what you mean...I live in SF and it's so hard to find a job here. What stores have you applied to? It seems like there are a few retail environments where being intellegent would come in handy-- a bookshop, maybe?

Isn't SF supposed to LOVE people like you?

BTW You can't live as a woman. That would defeat the purpose. I assume you are supposed to try living as a man before anything else, to see if you really want that. If you aren't taking hormones, you probably can't pass as a man. Again, I'm sure the hormones DO have some permanent effects, so taking them would be out of the question also. If you can tone down the speech, I assume you can't, if it is such a problem, then maybe you can be a technical writer. Or maybe a writer for some more advanced publication. If worse comes to worse, maybe you can work for the village voice. I would think THEY have offices down there.

BTW have you tried any homosexual forums, etc...

Steve

I have a job related problem.

It's summer time here and courses will start in February. I have very little experience in the workforce, due to raising my kids since I was 19. I would love to earn some money since I have moved from my husband (until I sort myself out) last month.

What is the best way to start???
