What causes attention drift and stops me from cranking out

I have trouble writing long complex programs and staying organized. I understand exactly what I'm doing but I can't explain how I get overwhelmed and sometimes can't complete my work. I took me very long to grasp concepts in software like advanced pointers.

I can't explain how my brain drifts off into an indeterminate state and drifts into zero productivity mode. I end up surfing the web and getting nothing done.

Break up the work into manageable modules. Divide and conquer.
