How do you discourage the question: "What's up?" It really pisses me off when people ask me this and I'd wish they'd do something else, but I don't want to seem really mean.

It doesn't work. I've though of saying: "A billion nuclear explosion expending energy on a magnitude no human could ever comprehend". But it never comes out right.

Uh.. what's so hard about saying "I'm fine." or "I'm Good." or "Nothing much." ?

If you aren't aware, they're just asking you how you're feeling/doing. Really.

Say either the sky, or start looking up at some clouds and then they'll leave you alone. :)

I'm guessing that I got you riled up in my introduction thread, ahayes?

What's Up, to me has been replaced by Hi in some instances, just say not much to it or in my case 'f**k All' :P

Also, if someone randomly asks you it, wouldn't you think that they're trying to initiate conversation with you? which last time I checked, was a good thing... :P

You could always tell the person that you hate the word, it often encourages a humerous conversation.

I know what you mean. That question always puzzles me too, and I don't know what to reply. Or similar questions like "How are you?", "How are things?" and so on.

I have a friend who keeps saying whenever she talks to me, "Now tell me something, anything" or "Tell me something good". I never know what she means and I all I can do is utter this embarrassed little laugh, maybe mutter something and wait until she starts to talk about something else. I simply don't know what to say. One of those days I just told her outright that I don't know how to respond to such statements, and that I'd rather she specify what exactly she means. She understood and it's been better since then.

Maybe it'd be a good idea in your case to do the same and say directly that such questions confuse you? The conversation could go from there, and the other person would at least understand why you're ay a loss what to say.

"What's up?"

"You!"

Don't discourage it. There's no reason to be pissed off about it. It is the common colloquial that means "Hello, how are you." This is people being nice. I would be more pissed about people ignoring you or being rude.

that said...

"What's up?"

"You seem to be, and so am I. If by 'up' you mean awake. 'Up and at'em' you might say. Of course this could be a dream in my head or in yours, but as an existentialist I tend to be biased toward this being my dream. In either case, we are still 'up' but only in this completely imaged dream-scape."

Up up and aaaawaaay, in my beautiful, my beautiful balloooon!

I hate that question too! I never know whether I'm supposed to answer with how I am or with what I'm doing. I usually say "Nothing much"; it seems to be a safe answer.

Don't discourage it, just answer it with the standard "nothing."

It really isn't that big of a deal unless you make it one. I always say "not much". Just accept it as a minor social convention. It might not make much sense to you but the question is more one of courtesy.

If it's a person I don't know though I say:

"Nothing", or ignore them until they go away.

If it's an aqquaintace, I say:

"Nothing much, I'm just a bit fed up and down."

If it's my mum, I either say:

"Life's s**t isn't it?"

"The usual miserable self."
