I'm constantly being told I'm stupid, ret*d, have no brain, etc. on here. Yes, I'm told that in real life very often. Well, as a kid it was "ret*d", as an adult it is "clueless", but it's the same sentiment.

I guess I should accept it. I have a very high IQ, if I'm to believe the psychologists, but I don't usually mention it because no one ever believes it. I did very well in school and in college. I had near perfect scores on the SAT and GRE. It may sound pathetic or like a lie, but when you're constantly bombarded with insults to your intelligence you cling to these things. The truth is, I'm terrified of being stupid. The feeling I hate most is confusion. Not knowing why I am almost universally considered stupid is horrible. Yes, I know I'm autistic, and therefore "socially ret*d", but I seem to get this treatment more than other autistic people and more than people who say they are technically ret*d! I can't make three posts on this very website without someone saying I have no brain. If I don't know what I am, if I can't say anything true and accurate and communicate with people in a meaningful way, I might as well be dead.

Thanks for listening.

I'm sorry you are having this experience. I was told once in PPR that I was not smart enough to continue a discussion with. Anonymity can make people rude.

Try not to worry about it. You know what your strengths are even if others don't. For myself, there are things I will never get - it scares me, 'cause I'm not sure what I'm missing, but there's nothing to be done about it.

Oh, dear. I'm so sorry. As also a possessor of a high IQ, I was dismayed to learn that it is only good for getting through school; it doesn't help with much else in life. You might be in the way of other peoples' agendas to be attacked as often as you say. I wish disputes did not descend so often into personal insults.

There's also another thing that makes us rude, you know, that one thing that unites us.

To the OP: intelligence isn't measured on a straight line, and there are different kinds of intelligence. Might I advise reading the following:

Yes, it's true that asperger's makes us rude, but I suppose it also makes us honest. If other aspies call me stupid, I can believe I come across that way.

Ann - " For myself, there are things I will never get - it scares me, 'cause I'm not sure what I'm missing" yes, exactly. It scares me so much I can't take action at all.

lelia - I've heard it predicts success for NT's, but not necessarily for us.

Valk - I'm familiar with that, but I'm not really sure how it applies. The types of intelligence that result in a high IQ score should show up on a discussion forum like this, I would think. I know I lack interpersonal intelligence (that's why I'm here), but then shouldn't people attack my personality more than my intellect?

If someone is calling you "stupid", then it is best that you take it up with one of the mods.

I wouldn't worry about it. I went back and looked at some of your posts and didn't see anything that looked "stupid". At least, nothing that looked anything near as stupid as some of mine.

It can be a real challenge to write something that will be understood as it was intended, especially for those of us who aren't skilled writers. One result of that lack of skill is that it can be just as easy to interpret something as condescending as it was to write it badly enough that it might be interpreted as condescending. And it can be quite easy to write something that sounds a bit stupid even when it is anything but that.

Thanks, eric. Maybe I'm oversensitive because this is such a sore spot for me. I probably shouldn't take the name-calling of people who seem to be trolling so seriously.
Fnord, I didn't think of that, but you're probably right. One of these users was insulting others as well.

Their is clearly nothing wrong with IQ, you have achievements that validate that, so why do you care what people on here think? They should know better since people with neurological differences are usually viewed as ret*d or 'stupid' even if they posses a normal or above normal intelligence.

What is it that you've said that gets people to insult you with the words 'stupid? Have you stated an opinion and have been called stupid..? Usually words like 'stupid' 'idiot' gets thrown about a lot, its an emotive response.

The only stupid members on this board are the ones who confuse reacting for listening to others.
If its someone you'd rather not discuss who carries on acting like the class clown which is often the case as they are afraid of their own insecurities and don't really know which direction in which to turn then its best just to leave them alone, and not come back to the subject once its passed unless an apology has been made. Just move on.

Can you give a link to a thread where this has happened?

Was it one like this:-

http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp5401157 ... t=#5401157

I saw this thread and saw how people were reacting to the OP's thoughts and decided to steer clear of it as it looked to me as if people hadn't understood the OP's premise and were ridiculing them for their ideas, which I had thought perfectly reasonable

If I see the tone of argument some people are taking I can tell whether they are likely to listen to reason and I could see they weren't likely to and I wasn't in a mood to argue the toss so avoided the thread

If I'd been on there I would probably have taken the stick like a weather vane and you'd have avoided it probably

It tends to happen when an opinion goes against the majority opinion

To sum up - you're certainly not stupid, you were just in the minority in your viewpoint amongst a group of people who didn't want to debate the issue calmly and respectfully - this invariably happens when race is the issue

Anyone that calls you stupid lacks the intelligence to come up with a better insult.
I got called an a$$hole, told I had a bizzaro mind,or something like that here,I just figure they were being a jerks.
I never liked being called stupid either,a teacher said that once when I was in second grade.

I was called stupid on this very website a couple of times over the years and the people who suggested that I was stupid did so in a very blunt manner. I felt very betrayed when it happened, but I was sort of expecting it from the second person who did that, because she was a WP bully.

Regarding that particular thread, the notion that Autistic people constitutes a different race is extremely absurd. The only way I can understand that someone might say it is if they really don't understand the concept of race.

I would look at their agenda before assuming they are either right or wrong.

If you find many people with a certain agenda are calling you stupid - disregard it. If you find many people with *no* agenda calling you stupid - that is the time to seriously look at the things you are attempting to convey, firstly make sure you have conveyed it in a suitable way and time, and then check if the idea itself is sound.
