Chances are this is a gimmick of little commercial value, because the advertising will reach relatively few people. However, the fact that they actually built it still saddens me. It's not enough that every empty space has to be filled with advertising, now people can't even rest their heads without hearing it! I mean, people will make the effort to avoid it (by using pillows or leaning on something else) - but they shouldn't have to!

Quote:
"Passengers got surprised and enjoyed this new form of advertising"

I'm not surprised that they were surprised, but I'd be really curious to know how the company determined that they enjoyed it. My bet is on this statement being a typical marketing lie.

I wonder how easy it would be to hack the system...

"Hello ... no, don't look around ... you're the only one who can hear me ... get off the train at the next station, because ..."

or

"If you don't want to feel a knife in your back, you'll take out your wallet and drop it between the seats ..."

or

"Hey, little girl ... that's a pretty dress you have on ... want some candy?"

This with it's 'novel' approach just paves the way for more intrusive interactive marketing.

I had to take a train from Hamburg to Cologne a few months ago. Even though it was just an IC, not even an ICE, it didn't suck. And I don't think this form of advertising will be used in German long-distance trains operated by DB (like ICs or ICEs), I have never seen any ads in long-distance trains except for a few interesting ones.
