The worst thing for me being an ASpie is the feeling on lonliness. I know I am not alone but feel that I am not really connected to anyone. I understand the concept of emotion, I just don't feel it unless it is something intense.
I wish you didn't feel so alone. TV, movies, and other mass media tend to represent a world where people are really connected and are constantly interacting in close ways, but I think the truth is that most people feel alone, and often lonely, and that genuinely close relationships are rare--not only in the Asperger community, but in the neurotypical world at large. I believe those of us with Asperger characteristics are more keenly aware of what most people block out of their minds.
I know that isn't a cheerful response, but sometimes it can help just to consider that loneliness is pretty well universal--not just something that afflicts me. Now and then I am able to reach out and help somebody, and that feels better than almost anything. Loneliness disappears for a while.... I just don't have the social skill to do this really often, or to know how to facilitate doing it. I'm grateful when it happens, though.
