KI is something that needs to be within a "freshness" date for maximum potency. Perhaps the government's stockpile is aging to the point that they need to be ready to replace it.

Odd since if there was a nuclear "incident," the government probably has no real way to distribute it to everyone who needs it.

I do hope the replacement of an existing stockpile is the only reason.

Maybe they wont distribute it to everyone that needs it, just to the people they like.

It is likely a replacement supply. That is actually only a fraction of what is required for national emergency preparedness guidelines. If you live within a certain distance of a nuclear power plant, you may actually recieve some in the mail at no cost once they are distributed (unless your state has exempted itself from those federal guidelines).

It is really just a feel-good/comfort thing passed after the panic of TMI and Chernobyl. The iodine has to be in your system fairly quickly after a meltdown or a nuclear attack/dirty bomb to do some good. It is unlikely (in the US, anyway) that any type of accident would cause the same kind of thyroid effects as seen in Chernobyl, as here in the US they would not be keeping it secret for a long enough time for civilians to be sitting around being exposed to the radioactive iodine.

It is used in thyroid conditions, not just nuclear disasters.
