Yes, I constantly trip over my feet and knock over my chair when I'm pulling it out. But for some reason I am a good dancer. I have been told this by many people. As a matter of fact, I do some breakdancing and people have been very impressed (seriously, peoples are amazed when I start doing stuff on my hands, not to brag). I danced for the first time in public a couple months ago and had an amazed reaction from people Has anyone here found that they are good at dancing despite bad coordination? I think one person mentioned it a long time ago, calling it something like the Napoleon Dynamte Complex. haha.

I am not good at dancing, i would never try to dance. But I was getting pretty good at jiu-jitsu. Its a martial art, a contact sport, and kind of like wrestling. I never though i would like it, i just went to one class with my friend, then found out how awesome it is. I always liked to watch UFC and stuff, kung fu movies i loved that s**t. i like jiu-jitsu because its the ground work mostly, whenever fighters goto the ground in UFC, thats jiu jitsu. Just when we do it, there is no punching :P like Royace Gracie said "I just dont want to get hit." Anyways after only a few months of going to jiu jitsu, i got pretty good. the instructor guy (we are not traditional, so i don't know what hes really called, we just call him by name) had really noticed me, and offered me to compete in the next eastern Canadian competition. everything was seaming great, i found my sport, other people at my gym where cool, got in better shape, built strength... but then, it happened; I was working with a new guy, and i explained exactly how to do an armbar to get the best results with least effort and least time. he did it EXACTLY as i described... and hyper extended my elbow. no more jiu jitsu for me :'(

You know, I'm the same way and I've often wondered how that is. I see it as it being similar to that old country singer who stuttered like crazy but when he sang, his words flowed together, no stuttering.

I couldn't remember his name when I posted so I searched under stuttering country singer. It's Mel Tillis.

My coordination has always been abysmal. There was not a single sport I was remotely good at. But then I started taking dance classes. Much to my amazement, I picked up quite a bit, and now I'm a fairly good dancer (both solo and with a girl). The question is: what is it about dancing that allowed me, one of the least coordinated people I know, to actually learn it?

Perhaps it's the patterns :P Stereotypically autistics/aspies are supposed to be good at pattern recognition. Are we talking about freestyle dancing or something choreographed?

I'm another one who was bad at sports. Playing things like rounders, cricket... I can't recall hitting the ball even once in my years of PE, except for the occasional fluke-ish glancing blow. The only thing I've ever found I could do was Dance Dance Revolution which I discovered a year ago, and I've gone from being totally incompetent to being able to pass a good few of the easier "catastrophics". I put it down to pattern recognition in my case; the arrows come up, and in time you start reading them not as individual arrows but units - ah, this is a crossover, that is a gallop, that is a candle step and so I must turn my body THIS way.

I think it's akin to people who cannot physically write coherently but can play beautiful music or paint. I think they have found this with ASD (at least I've read about it), but they aren't sure yet why it happens. It's almost like, given the correct mechanism, you suddenly have that skill, but still only when you have that mechanism and it doesn't carry over into other things. I've also heard of people with Asperger's learning to rock climb when in other instances they are uncoordinated. It's an interesting anomaly. I would love to know how it works.

Yes! Despite the fact that I consistently bash my head on things, trip, drop stuff, and have terrible balance, I have very good rhythm. I've always loved to dance, but only do so in public if I've had a couple (okay, a lot) of drinks. When I dance, I am completely into the music and the lights, and do not even acknowledge my partner's presence or those around me. Sometimes, though, I know that I overdo it and almost cross the line into Elaine (from Seinfeld) territory.

for me it is not related to pattern recognition, as the dancing I do is freestyle and the breakdancing involves a lot of standing on my hands (thats how I got good, I did a lot of handstands). I will say that as for sports, I was terrible. Wrestling I did for 3 years in highschool. I was terrible at it. Somebody would demonstrate how to do a move, and I just wouldn't get it, it confused me.

Sometime I am so badly coordinated, that one person tried to stop me from driving because they thought I was ratassed.

Another time, I just put it on to scare my friends friends. It was great I tell thee; when I put the peddle to the metals they was sh*****g themselves silly. Appeared to be like an immature drunken child behind the wheel. I was more mad then Toad from wind and the willows, played a part in scaring their friends who did not know me.

It was classical dancing, such as Waltz, Swing, Salsa, etc. I took those classes over the course of a few years, changing my focus on whatever struck my interests. My goal was to learn the basics enough to become comfortable on the dance floor, which I did. As for freestyle dancing, I simply incorporated moves from Salsa and Swing into my repertoire of moves, in addition to the moves commonly used in freestyle and not found in any classic dance. Since the dances I took have the same rhythm as freestyle dancing, it was fairly easy to freestyle dance using the skills I learned in a dance school.
